Devils River

Devils River - 06/10/15 05:28 PM

I got a deer lease near Juno a few years ago. After meeting some people that knew the area I started learning a little bit about the country, and heard a lot of stories about the Devils River. I did a little research on it, and decided I wanted to do a river trip. It took about two years to find people I trusted enough that were willing and able to make the trip with me and I finally did it last weekend.

We survived off beef jerky, crackers, fish we caught from the river, water we purified from the river, coffee we made from the river, and whiskey. We slept on the ground, turned our cell phones off, and enjoyed every minute of it for three days. It was absolutely the best adventure of my life.

Here are some of my favorite pictures.

What photo editing did you use on those pics? They almost don't look real lol.

Re: Devils River - 06/10/15 05:40 PM

looks like he's using filters Sapper. Even most phones have them or if you load onto PB they have some basic filters as well. His pics came out great even more so the perspective he took them from.

There's a handful of APPS on my phone that I use. Just depends on the light and background and stuff what I do to them. Some of these didn't have anything done to them. Most of them are stills taken from GoPro videos. The GoPro shoots HD video with a lot of frames per second so the image quality is outstanding, which is really what matters the most to start with.

Awesome pics. I floated the Devil back in the mid 90's with 4 friends. Most fun I have ever had even to this day. I would love to do it again.

Great job.

Re: Devils River - 06/10/15 11:29 PM

We put in at Baker's Crossing. We went 23 miles down river and got out at Gerald Bailey's house. He has an awesome house built into a cliff overlooking the river, and he runs a shuttle service and rents kayaks and canoes.

The water is super clear, and gets a little murky in some places, just depends on where you are at. Some places you can look down and see fish clear as daylight swimming in water 10-15 feet below you.

Re: Devils River - 06/10/15 11:37 PM

I'm doing another trip and making it longer. We didn't have near as much time to fish as I would have liked to. We had to paddle/drag kayaks 8 miles a day to get home on time, and it was a lot of work. Doing a 5 day trip next time so we can enjoy it more.

This was more of a trial run than anything. There were 4 of us and we had never done anything even remotely similar in our lifetimes.

Re: Devils River - 06/10/15 11:52 PM

Do you know what the flow was for your float? I did it 7 or 8 years ago, at about 180 cfs, and it was way too low. We didn't have any time to fish, and had to paddle long and hard to make the takeout on schedule. Still it was a blast, and the Devils is an awesome river. I'd like to do it again but with a higher flow.

My brother was a guide for the Boy Scouts up on Moose Lake in MN for the canoe base. We went on a 9 day trek up into Canada through Prairie Portage. We ended up going a total of 115+ miles in 9 days. My next goal was to find a spot in Texas to have a canoe trip down a river. This may be it!

Did you get shot at or ticketed for trespassing? Land owners on the Devils are just a tad bit on the sensitive side. bolt

No Sir. We saw 4 people total during the trip, they were on the little piece of land that TPWD owns with River frontage. There are islands and anything that would be underwater if the river rose up to 11 inches is legal to camp on (very gradual banks).

Lots of no trespassing signs, definitely have to be careful about getting out of the water though. A little common sense will keep you out of trouble.
