Wippoorwill

Wippoorwill - 06/08/15 01:30 AM

After enjoying the calls night after night of the Wippoorwill for the past five years out at my place north of Clarksville, I happened upon this little lady while out riding my 4 wheeler. I had stopped and shut off the motor to sit listen to the sounds of the woods as I frequently do, and I looked about six feet away on the ground to what at first just looked like a decaying branch from a pine tree from the head on view that I had.

After studying more closely I saw what looked like eyes, head and a beak. These things really blend in to their surroundings! She was sitting on an egg and I reached for the cell phone to take a pic or two before she flushed and started her act to draw me away from the egg. I rode back to the house to get a real camera with a zoom lens and took a few pics at different times over the weekend. I hope they survive the blue indigo snake that I saw cruising the area!

I'm no "birder", but technically I think it's a Chuck-Will's-Widow.

They know how to play the camo game, that's for sure. Mossy Oak ain't got nothing on them. I hope you don't mind me adding a photo of one of my favorite birds we used to call the Bullbat!!!! Baker

Great pics, I have never seen one that I know of. Was listening to the sound about a week ago at our lease and wondered about the bird.
Thanks!
