A snake you don't see everyday

A snake you don't see everyday - 06/02/15 12:51 PM

My dog found this little milksnake at my house yesterday evening. In all my years of living in the country and handling snakes in this area, this is the first one I have every found. I released it in my field.

Good for you. 99% of the people would think it was a coral snake and kill it.

That's a beauty. Must have shed very recently. We call them Coral King Snakes around my neck of the woods.

The way I heard it was "Red and yellow kill a fellow, red and black venom lack."

In all my travels in Texas and the untold hours I've spent out of doors, I have never run across a Milk Snake, Coral Snakes...yes, many times. Very COOL find!

As already noted, most folks would have killed it for a Coral Snake, not knowing the difference.

Of course, it is well to know that the color pattern for a Coral Snake (Red touch Yellow) only applies to the indigenous Corals of the United States, there are actually Coral snakes in other regions of the world that have 'Red touch Black' patterns (among others) that are indeed venomous snakes.

The Scarlet Kingsnake is another snake that is often mis-identified, but doesn't range too far into Texas.

What a great find...and my hat is off to you for taking good care of the milksnake.

Flint.

Actually, there's no such creature as a Coral King Snake. We have both Louisiana Milk Snakes (lampropeltis triangulum amaura) and the similarly patterned Scarlet King Snake (lampropeltis elapsoides), but they both get called Coral King Snakes. It's not correct, but that's the way it is. grin

The old saying is not always true. We caught this Texas Long Nose at our house several years ago and red does touch yellow.

I found one in West Virginia when I was deer hunting once. It was about the size of the one you have pictured. Extremely pretty snake.
