In all my travels in Texas and the untold hours I've spent out of doors, I have never run across a Milk Snake, Coral Snakes...yes, many times. Very COOL find!
As already noted, most folks would have killed it for a Coral Snake, not knowing the difference.
Of course, it is well to know that the color pattern for a Coral Snake (Red touch Yellow) only applies to the indigenous Corals of the United States, there are actually Coral snakes in other regions of the world that have 'Red touch Black' patterns (among others) that are indeed venomous snakes.
The Scarlet Kingsnake is another snake that is often mis-identified, but doesn't range too far into Texas.
What a great find...and my hat is off to you for taking good care of the milksnake.
