Found a rifle on my place...

Found a rifle on my place... - 02/05/15 01:06 AM

It was just laying in my pasture. Fairly certain its been run over, mowed over, disc'd and cow stompted a few hundred times. I think it is a Stevens falling block. Not a .22 though, as the bore is larger than that. The barrel is octagon for the first 8 or 9" changing to round for the remainder. When I first picked it up I thought it was an old hand brake lever...

Trade value $1,638.43... bolt

I had the $1638. But the 43 cents? Now you are just another scalper trying to take advantage.

But I'll let you give it a test run BP.

Re: Found a rifle on my place... - 02/05/15 02:30 AM

Dang neat find. cheers Bet there is a story behind how it got there also. It appears the hammer was back on it also? I found a spent rimfire casing from the late 1800's that had been misfired. Then I guess taken out of the rifle and put back in the rifle and tried a second time. I could tell this by the 2 sets of crimps marks.

That is a crazy cool find! If that old rifle could talk, just imagine the stories it might have to tell. It would be really neat to know it's story, darn shame that it will go untold.

Re: Found a rifle on my place... - 02/05/15 04:22 AM

That is pretty neat. I was going to ask if it was loaded because it almost looks like the hammer is cocked, but you already answered that question.
Did Chuck Conners used to live on your place?

That would be great and it almost deserves it. Over the fireplace or something. Bet the history behind it would blow our minds. Sure it provided more than a meal or two along the way. And how does it just end up laying on the ground? Maybe leaned up against a wagon and forgotten about when they rolled forward...maybe something wild. I like it!

I would do as MikeC suggested and make a plaque and hang it somewhere. Great piece of history.

It might be worth taking a metal detector out in that field when you have some time. No telling what else will turn up.

Thats what I was thinking as well, happened allot in early Tejas. By the description of the barrel, anyone have a clue what type rifle and or manufacture? It would seem possible with an octagon barrel changing to standard?

Photos like this is why I guesstimate the rifle to be a Stevens Falling Block. I'm no expert, but lots of similarities..

I must have missed where you posted the name, thanks., Compared to the OP's photos, that looks spot on! Do you know when those, or that model was produced?

Re: Found a rifle on my place... - 02/06/15 05:13 PM

That is a neat find. With that caliber it would not be a military round. Some one personal hunting / plinking round. Might send pictures to Texas Ranger Museum in Waco, or West Texas Museum in Canyon, or even Stevens. GL cheers

Why they always gotta be Comanches? That's racist.
