Illinois DoeZilla

Illinois DoeZilla - 01/12/15 06:16 PM

4 day hunt in S.E. Illinois. Saw a ton of deer. Had 2 young 8 & 10 pointer come within bow range. Saws good 140 class 8 pointer but had broken G2. But only got within 60 yards. Also had a high 8 pointer within 45 yards but it was also young.

Waited for last hunt to harvest doezilla. She was in middle of hurd of yearlings and doe. Last second she ran to lead the group. Mistake. Walked in what I thought was 20 yards. After ranging it in more like 15 yards. In one motion drew, settled pin, sent arrow. Solid thud. Stumbling after she turned to run. Set up hunt at 6:45am. Was in truck with deer by 8:15am.

Illinois deer hunting happens very fast. Gotta stay on your toes.

Look at length and width of this backstop!!! DINNER

My BIL lives in S.E. Illinois. His place backs up to a national forest. It's great to wake up, get a cup of coffee, and watch all the deer and turkey in his yard. He has 4 stands he hunts within walking distance of the house. Has a garage full of horns and keeps the freezer full of meat. Beautiful country with tons of big deer.

That's a nice doe! I'd be curious on the bow as well , looks like an older Bear maybe?

Its my first compound bow a PSE (Bass Pro Shop) White Tail Extreme. Purchased it January of 2003. Used this hunt to retire ole' faithful. Put a lot of miles on her and figure Illinois would be a good excuse to put her on the wall. Now that I'm invited back annually to Illinois figured I'd pick up a new bow!

Order of what I am looking at:
PSE Drive LT
Bowtech Carbon Icon
Bear Traxx

No kidding. It's not "if" you'll get a shot! It's "when" you choose the right deer. Gonna hold back on a buck until I really see a bruiser. I would have shot the 140-150 with the broken G2 but never came into range. He was a good mature 5 year older.

I thought it looked older! Looks well used! I currently shoot a Ross Cardiac, like it, but I too am looking for a change... It'll be a Hoyt for me, a Faktor 30 sure does feel sweet! Congrats again

Lots of great slightly used bows for that. Buddy just picked up fully rigged one year old creed for that.

Kind of bitter sweet retiring a bow. I've did same few years back.

Congrats on the hunt!!!
