CottarKnives finished in December - 01/02/15 10:14 PM

I worked a ton in the shop putting together some knives in December. I thought I would share a few of the pieces that came out of my shop. Thanks for looking.

8" OAL from 3/16" 1095. Black Micarta and Orange Liner

7.5" EDC model from 3/16" 1095 bar stock and made in house Fire Hose Micarta

8" Cleaver/Kitchen Chopper from antique Sawmill blade. The angular scores on the steel are from its use generations ago as a circular saw blade.

Using up the last bits of scrap from the Antique sawmill blade. A small necker and razor. The center of the saw blade is still visible on the bottom of the necker.

Green liner on the EDC from 5/32"" 1095 bar stock

Blue Liner on this EDC from 5/32" bar stock

Orange liner on sheepsfoot blade made from antique sawmill blade.

12" Kitchen knife from sawmill blade. Black walnut handle.

12" Kitchen knife from sawmill blade, birds eye maple handle.

12" Kitchen knife from sawmill blade, mesquite handle

Almost forgot the ULU's. The one on top still carries some of the original markings from the Curtis Saw Co. St. Luis Mo. I did not see them on the metal until after I had finished and buffed off years of rust and my heat treat. The one on the bottom cracked during heat treat. I could not bring myself to throw it out after the steel had served for so many decades. I think I'll let the crippled blade hang out in the shop with me as a reminder of how much we learn by our mistakes. Lesson learned.

Yes sir, if you hear a "ping" when quenching that blade is toast. Been there up
