My 2014 Oklahoma Trophies

My 2014 Oklahoma Trophies - 12/26/14 01:44 AM

I started hunting this buck in October of 2013, and he was the most illusive I've ever pursued. I had literally hundreds of game cam pictures of him, but I only saw him once from a stand during 2013. This year, I put my cameras back out in mid August, and my buck showed back up on September 21st. He was big last year, but on camera, he looked to have gained several more inches. I basically put my life on hold to hunt this buck. I got hundred of game cam pictures again this year and had four close encounters, but I finally closed the deal on the evening of October 24th. He came in just before dark, and I shot him at 22 yards with my crossbow. He ended up being at least 6.5 and grossing 173" as a 10 point, and he weighed 275 pounds. He is my second highest scoring buck. I killed a 178" 14 point 10 years ago.

I also killed my first tom turkey. He was an old bird with a 10" beard.

I contribute much of his gain to adequate rainfall after 4 years of drought, and he did it all on his own with no supplemental feeding. I own 360 acres surrounded on two sides by cow pasture and two sides by federal wetlands.

I have a couple "up and comers" on camera, and I'm planning to plant about 50 acres of food plots this spring. I would like to improve my odds of another good buck next year.

He had great genetics and age. Those 2 are really made a huge difference along with the good rainfall this year.

Black eyed peas and alfalfa . Leave the peas and cut the alfalfa. One cutting will pay for both food plots. You can use a custom baler and do it on the halves.

I thought about alfalfa, but I figured it would be too expensive. I've had a local farmer suggest cow peas and milo, but I'm still not sure what I'm going to do yet.

Re: My 2014 Oklahoma Trophies - 12/26/14 06:49 PM

You should be able to get more than one year out of an alfalfa planting in that area. More cost intially to plant but then if you get 3-5 yrs would be well worth it. Might try 10 acres this first year along with the cowpeas or soybean and or milo. You could have the milo/beans harvested or baled also.

I get three years just east of you in Pawnee/Osage. But I got where I was lightly overseeding every other year.
Looking at 50-75 acre for seed. If you want to hold off a little bit mix turnips and peas on the whole thing. That will usually add year for every year you decide to run alafafa. Lots off guys do a 5 year rotation. Turnips or any bulb will put a lot of of goodies into the soil that alafafa thrives on.

Biggest thing with alafafa is fertilizer, army worms and drought. A good alafafa feild in that areas is a death plot smile

I wouldn't even bother with milo.

I'm shooting a Matrix 380 and Boltcutter 150 gr broadheads. I've killed 4 deer and a turkey with that bow and 34 deer and two turkeys with those broad heads. They have served me well.
