Junction area Black Buck - 12/22/14 01:56 PM
I shot this really nice buck last week and wanted to say thanks to Heathe( THF outfitter) and Sam and Mike (Ranch owners of Chalk Creek Exotics). I had a great time hunting this ranch. I've never hunted Black Buck before and found that these guys are constantly herding their doe or chasing other bucks off. Sam said that I would probably have to get close enough to take a shot while he was moving. We hunted him hard and I had shots at other bucks, but this was the best one I had seen. His group of doe came to a feeder about 5:15 and I could see him in the brush...but he wouldn't come out. Finally another buck showed up and he had to defend his territory. He ran the other buck off and started moving his doe out of the area. I know without a doubt that if that other buck hadn't showed up....I would have never got a shot. I shot him with my Sako 85 Hunter 260 Rem (Thanks Wiley Coyote) and 120 Gr Nosler BT. Slightly quartering away, right behind right shoulder and nice exit out the center of his opposite shoulder. Made it about 15-20 feet before he fell and kicked a couple times. The day before I had shot a cull whitetail buck outside Rocksprings and experienced the same performance. Really liking this 260.
He was starting to broom out on the tips and measured just under 21" straight tape. Taylor with TNT Taxidermy is mounting him for me and I'm going with a table pedestal. I finally got to meet Taylor and see some of his work in person.....very talented!!!
