Trapped a nice coon......

Trapped a nice coon...... - 12/14/14 09:10 PM

Been setting the duke traps out this year when we see coons on the cameras. I have caught 7 so far this year. But they were all females.

Checked this trap Fri at 11:00 am and nothing was in it. Checked it Saturday morning and this big boar was in there. I knew he was big and gonna get mounted for my hunting room.

He weighed 24 lbs per my scale in the garage.

I have tried all different kinds of bait in mine. I have came to the conclusion that either canned cat food works best and just plain old corn kernels. What do yall use?

Tuna. That is all we have used and we have caught a coon every time we have set them.

Sardine's.

Tuna or sardines works the best for me. My dog loves the coon cuffs. Makes her job a lot easier!

Re: Trapped a nice coon...... - 12/15/14 03:03 AM

Thx guys. Last year they robbed us blind and this year we changed our feeders to the Primos Vault feeder.

They have helped a lot. We get a few pictures of coons on the feeders but they don't stay. But when I see them on the feeders I set the coon traps. It's fun also.

Now if I could find a good way to catch 4-5 bobcats we have on our game cams.

Nice hide on that boar! Glad to see those duke traps work so well. I sell them at the feed store I manage, but have not heard much feedback.

This is our first year to use them. Easy to set, bait and take coons out when they are caught.

What I use in my live trap is the giant size marshmallows. Throw them in the back and sprinkle a little water on them to get the smell started. I told a GW about how well it seems to work and he said that those large marshmallows look like turkey eggs to a coon, and that coon's love turkey eggs.

Those Duke's traps do work well. My son has a few of them that he sets around the lease to take out the corn stealing little ba$tasrds, and for some spending money in the winter. We like them because they will only catch coons. We don't mind the occasional fox using the jaw traps but don't want to trap the ringtails. He uses marshmallows as the bait in the trap, and anise oil as a call scent. God, I hate that stuff.

Mr T, that makes sense that marshmallows look like turkey eggs. Lots and lots of turkeys on this ranch. I'll have to give that a try.
