My dad's Briscoe Cochina buck

My dad got the opportunity to hunt the Briscoe Cochina this week. He was as excited as a kid at Christmas. He is the biggest Texas history buff I know and he would of been content just driving around and taking pics and video. It all worked out this morning at 7 am. Wish I could of gone.

Thanks, he hunted the Driscoll in Duval county for years that was owned by Briscoe as well. People that have never hunted south Texas just don't get it. It gets in your blood and nothing ever feels the same. At least it does to me.

His customer he took down there was from Blue Bell but he was unable to secure a life time supply of ice cream. I was very disappointed by this.

Well my dad likes to write stories and he is notorious for filling up all his buddies and families emails.
So here is his latest installment.


My Fellow Hunters,
It is once again time for a deer story. I just got back from a customer deer hunt on the Cochina Ranch west of Cotulla. The ranch is 34,000 acres under low fence. We hunted on 26,000 acres of it. We hunted out of high rack trucks that we parked in the brush off roads and sendero's, after we corned the area. My customer and I both saw 5 to 6 bucks each hunt. I was looking for a mature management 8 that could go up to 140. The guide and I both looked over every deer real close, because it had to be a slick 8 without even a sticker point. I saw probably 25 bucks during the 3 day hunt. We also saw lots of quail, dove and hogs with a few turkeys by the river. We were the first hunters this season and had the place to ourselves, since we could not hunt during the rut in December. I being the savvy hunter I am, knew that you could sometimes find a good buck early in season, if there was not a lot of activity on the ranch yet. What I had not counted on was all the oilfield traffic we encountered. The ranch had a big gas compressor station on it with another one being built. There were at least 2 frac jobs going on and I counted 3 drilling rigs operating. They were also building another pipeline for gas and oil, plus one for water. The funny thing was the deer did not seem affected by all the noise. They would just move down the road away from the activity, since they had a lot of country to hide in.
Anyway, back to the deer story. On Wednesday afternoon right at dark, we spotted what looked like a big 8 on the edge of the brush, near a pipeline right of way. It was just too dark to take a shot. We corned the road next to the brush line and decided to come back way before sunrise the next morning. We got set up the next morning and waited for the sun to come up. About 15 minutes before we had good light, some does and a young 10 showed up to eat some corn. Right after that we spotted the big 8 about 320 yards down the road, but eating corn and working his way towards us. We still did not have enough light to see if he had any sticker points (this was a big problem for me since I did not have extra money to pay for what the guide called an upgrade charge). I was OK if the guide gave the go ahead and it was a sticker point 9 or 10. The guide was a good guy, so for a change I listened to someone else's opinion on what deer to shoot (hard to believe isn't it).
So for the moment of truth (a good journalist always builds up the suspense). Are you suspended yet? Lets move in for the kill. Finally we had enough light to see he was a straight up 8 with no sticker points. I of course, already had the crosshairs on him and the safety off, when the guide said he was a shooter. I was waiting for him to get within 200 yards, when a big fat hog charged out onto the road to eat corn. The buck looked up and trotted off into the brush. I figured with my usual luck that was it and he was gone forever and ever. But most of the deer we had been watching that had spooked had just circled around the in the brush and came back onto the road to finish eating corn (no one had shot at them yet). I am just thankful none of you guys hunted this place before I got there (I would have to hunt the deer like prairie dogs). Are you suspended yet? Its building, do you feel it?
The big 8 walked walked back onto the road at 134 yards and I killed him. THE END. Just kidding. I shot him in the shoulder and he went 20 yards, did a nose dive and landed on his back with his horns stuck in the dirt. I have killed a number of big 8 pointers over the years, but this one is the best one yet (upon request I can send you my new book titled "BIG 8 Pointers I have Killed Over The Years" published by Doubletalk Inc). He was 19 1/2 inches inside and scored 138 1/4 inches (I bet you guys did not know I was a math wiz). The guide scored him, so I cannot use the McCoy Upgraded Scoring System on this one. The deer was 198 lbs on the hoof and 167 lbs field dressed. Special note: it was the heaviest deer I have ever shot. Refer to my other book "The Heaviest Deer I have Ever Killed" or wait for the movie.

Nice buck

I will be with him when he shoots his buck of a lifetime but it will be his grandson shooting his first doe,hog, or coyote. It is all he can think of since Gus was born is getting him out in the field. If you ask him the best times he has had hunting is with his children and nephews. But I will hopefully be able to get him on a 160"+ buck one day.
