Hays county - 10/26/14 10:30 PM

We have had a few good young bucks show up but this one is promising and looks mature. I will post a bigger picture from the video once my brother sends it to me.

I think this is the same buck off a game cam pic

Hard to tell from those pics of pics, but I would say no right now. Looks to be 2 different bucks with the top one being much larger.

Re: Hays county - 10/26/14 11:16 PM

Finally put them up on my laptop. The bottom is weaker on the G2's so I have to agree. That is good news we got 2 running around

Actually the more I look at it, the brow tines match but the left side is what makes me think they are a different buck then the poor picture quality makes me think the G2 in the night picture is just bad and they are the same buck.

I grew up in Hays County, just west of San Marcos. We've taken some pretty nice bucks there (the best was a 146" 12 point with only a 15" spread that my dad got a few years back). Those pictures aren't very clear, but IMO those are both above average bucks for the area. Good luck to ya

Re: Hays county - 10/27/14 04:29 AM

we have taken 3 over 140" on this place and the neighbor took a 178" a couple of years back. Hays county just like anywhere else can produce if you let them get some age. The best part is it's only 20 minutes to the front gate. I had a customer that had a place off of hunter road outside of san marcos and they took some really nice bucks in the 150-160 range. Landpirate on here has taken some good hays county bucks as well.

Looks like the one that jumped across Holland and LBJ today and almost ran over students loading at the bus stop...

Re: Hays county - 10/28/14 03:20 AM

Mike hopefully will be putting him down this weekend. This will be the best hunt ever. I will be escorted to the blind and since I am recovering from knee surgery my dad and brother will be doing everything. All I have to do is pull the trigger. But seriously I kind of don't like that part. The work before and after hunt are the parts that make the hunt, but I will accept the help.

I hear ya brother. Just get out and enjoy the experience. That's the main thing. Savior that time with family. It's fleeting.

Re: Hays county - 11/01/14 07:00 PM

Cibolo, how'd ya do? Did ya git 'em?

I saw a mature buck with an abnormally small 8 pt rack. He needs killing but wanted to see what else would show. Also saw a nice, heavy horned 9, but still quite young.

Any guesses on score? He didn't score what I had him at on the hoof but close. I have to give a huge thanks to my dad and little bro . They corned the roads, checked cams, set up blinds and did all the grunt work from July until today since I was laid up after the wreck and surgery. Saturday morning all 3 of us where in the blind but no dice and Saturday evening I was in to much pain to go back out. So they just scouted and saw a good young buck. So Sunday morning I don 'to wake up on time and drive out to the lease and my dad goes with me. Basically he was the pack mule/camera man since I was using a crutch. We have action as soon as the sun comes up. 2 big hogs who are running off the young 6 pointer. I was seconds away from shooting the boar but stayed the course. Well the hogs ran off a young forked horn who doubled back and the he started chasing a doe. My dad turned on the video camera and it sounds like r2 d2 has landed in the blind and spooks the doe. Well they go back to playing grab a(; and about 4 more for come out. We watch them for an hour or so and then they are gone. Me and dad go to looking on our phones checking emails,THF, etc. I am 2 seconds from packing it in because my knee is barking at me. When I look to my left and see movement and then some tines walking the road heading to some Tinks my dad set out. I pull up the rifle and tap my dad. The buck lifts up and I tell my dad it is him. He tells me hold on so he can get the video camera rolling and I make an executive decision due to the noise it made last time and say no. Didn't want to risk spooking him. I breath and then rest the cross hairs on the base of the neck. I have not shook like that since I was a kid. I breath again and squeeze the trigger and let the Ruger M77 .280 put in work. The old buck didn't go 2 feet. I am going nuts at this point, hi fives everywhere.

Sorry for the long read but I am still pumped laying here icing my knee and taking some meds. Now it is football time.

This is 3 generations of hunters and soon to be hunters. My dad has been taking me and my brother since we where born. My dad was taking me when I was barely a year old and sleeping in a converted hay barn on the Driscoll ranch in Duvall county. He gave me and my brother a front row seat to some of the most prime hunting areas in Texas and Mexico even though we didn't realize it until years later we just knew we got to hang out with my dad, uncles and their crazy buddies and love every minute of it. Now he is over the moon with the opportunity to do the same with Gus and I get to see if I can do at least half as good of a job that he did with me and my brother. Here is to you dad for showing me the right way, love ya.

Re: Hays county - 11/03/14 06:02 AM

ell I promise this will be the last time I post on this one I prkmise. Apparently my mom reads my dads THF and she saw my post to my pops. So I get a post "where was I?"" So crap I feel like a real a/# hat. She was the single most important part of my up bringing, you know the person behind the scenes. She is hands down the hardest working person I know. She was not a hunter she was a military brat. She loved my dad so she loved what he loved. She stayed at camp or hkme with me and my brother until we where old enough to hunt by ourselves so dad could get his hunting in. The rest of the season it was a family affair. She shot her first buck to shut up all the guys. She shot a buck one time while my brother was in the outhouse at over 200 yards with his rifle to see if she could do it. She told my wife and my brothers x wife before we got married and I quote " if you want to see your husband and kids between October and Febuary either learn to hunt or learn to deal with it". She was more excited thsn all of us today but she wouldn't let us put her in a pic because she wasn't made up. Mom you great white huntress, camp cook extrodinair and everything in between. Mom

love ya!
