Funny, but I'll pass. My poor shoulder has suffered enough abuse for one life.

The 4 gauge was used by market hunters for ducks and geese back when market hunters were around.

Market hunters were the folks that killed ducks to be sold commercially. They would mount those guns onto a swivel mount on the front of a punt (small boat) and make skillet shots into a flock. That's why some folks call them punt guns. The Texas Ranger's Museum in Waco had one on display several years ago, it might still be there.

In Capstick's book he talks of the early elephant hunters using black powder 4 bore's. It would knock them off their horses, break their shoulder and was so bad on the stocks they would wrap the stock in wet elephant hides to reinforce them when they dried. I believe they shot a 4 ounce lead slug.

I believe in the same book he talks of Mr Bell getting a double charge of black powder once causing bodily harm which was the main reason for using the 7x57 on jumbo.

Thanks for the history lesson. I would be all for shooting that thing if it was mounted on the stern of a boat and not against my shoulder! Good stuff guys. up
