How much does a sq ft of corn weigh?

Posted By: Jim Davis

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/26/11 05:09 AM

if not corn, you need to know how much a sq ft of whatever product weighs. you could both be right depending on the product.

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/26/11 05:24 AM

Ok we will put golden nuggetts in it by record rack co. not sure on the weight of a sq ft would be but if someone knows please let us know thanks

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/26/11 05:57 AM

Ok, it's 46.8 cu ft. If the filler weigh's 15 lbs/sq ft, it's 702, plus the volume of the pryamid at the bottom.

No idea what it will hold but I sure do like that idea.

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/26/11 10:34 AM

If I remember right corn weight is 45#/cubic foot. So I am guessing closer to about 2000#. Fill it and let us know. Just at first glance I was thinking way over 1500#s. Either way you gonna have to take out a loan to fill the first time with corn prices this year. bang

Well he's got the welding gear I guess he could make a corn conveyor belt or tube with an auger in a bin and put it in the back of a pickup or a flatbed and just drive up to the feeder pop the top and have the machine do all the work of loading... Just like feeding cattle. smile Heck if it worked well he could start a business charging people to keep their feeders filled partyon555

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/26/11 02:52 PM

It has a 1 1/4" strap weld to the top now this pic was taking earlier in the day plus the deck was also finish & inside of the box has cross dividers welded in place too should have a pic of it in the field up late tomorrow of it completed & with a total lbs it holds

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/26/11 03:24 PM

I have the LAMCO 1000 lb feeders and looking at yours I tend to agree with stxranchman, it will hold 1500-2000 lbs.

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/26/11 03:46 PM

I'd be more worried about weight than volume. It may be able to hold that much volume of corn, but can it hold that much weight in corn? Hellova nice feeder though. Good luck

That should hold, but if there is a catastrophic failure, you absolutely, positively have to take pics.

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/26/11 05:04 PM

Yeah that big SOB prolly hold a pallet of corn easily... 1750-2000lbs.... I agree, if it fails I want pics too... thats a lot of corn. Exspecially at $9/40lbs... hammer

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/26/11 05:11 PM

If corn is 45# a cubic foot. Cubic foot is 12"X12"X12"= 1728". Feeder is 40"X40"X52"= 83200". 83200"/1728"= 48.15'. 48.15' X 45# = 2166.75# pounds of corn. If my math is correct. A lot of $$$.

Posted By: Dmiller

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/26/11 06:22 PM

40lbs=$8.5, 2166.75#/40#= 54.168#*8.5= $460.43+tax= about $500 every time you fill up....

At the same time you save on gas, saving yourself 5 or 6 trips to the lease just to refill feeders...

Your feeders are like ol' whats his names Rotisseries... just set it and forget it!!!
Good luck

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/26/11 06:33 PM

Ok any failures I will have pics and you can believe there will be plenty of game cameras on that much corn laying on the ground But let's hope not !!!!!

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/26/11 06:37 PM

five gallons of corn weighs 25#.... do the math.

Posted By: Closed Traverse

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/26/11 06:42 PM

looks like about 1800#..... hope my math is right.

I did

40*40*52= 83200 cubic inches

83200ci= 360 gallons

360g/5g =72gallons

72gallons*25#corn=1800#corn

1800#corn= $300 per fill up

hope u made that thing strong, nearly a ton of weight in it

( if my math is wrong, dont tell me, just let me feel smart for a little while)

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/29/11 02:08 AM

Meet in the middle and say 850 LBS

Posted By: Ron H

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/29/11 02:27 AM

I did some similar calculations and compared to a 55 gal drum. The volume is 5 times more than the 55 gal drum. So, 1500lbs+ sounds right.

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/29/11 03:01 AM

I just hope your feeder legs will hold up to that much weight.

Posted By: Joe knows

Re: How much will it hold? - 08/29/11 03:07 PM

Ok guys here you go this feeder is 40 x 40 x 42 just the box & the hopper is 10" tall. The hopper held 175lbs we put another 475lbs in the box a total of 650 lbs the box was filled to about 8" from the diamond point in the side panel so that leaves 29" to be filled I did the math it should hold 1700 lbs if I'm right but I do need to go back to the drawing board on design the top held up good but a little more leg size & some more bracing would make me feel alot better having that much weight in the air BTW I will have to take that loan out when we take the new & improve feeder out will post pics as soon as possible
