Thorn Resistant UTV Tires

So I have a few UTVs on the ranch and have a serious problem with Thorns in the tires. I have them all slimed and it does help a lot but have a round a dozen plugs in each. I carry a plug kit, air pump and fix a flat. Shopping for some new ones that are more resistant to punctures. Would like suggestions on ones you have had good luck with. Do not need super aggressive as we are lucky if we get rain twice in a month.

Put some Surefoots on and don’t worry about tires anymore. I ruined 2 tires the first year I had my UTV. These pay for themselves in a hurry.

1st, use a real tire sealant, not slime. There are a dozen true heavy duty tire sealants available.
2nd, when buying tires look for 8ply and use a real tire sealant.
There are also a few 10ply UTV tires on the market.

When you mix fix a flat with slime inside a tire you actually reduce the effectiveness of both products.

Not sure about other products but the guys at tire shops seem to despise working on tires and wheels after Slime has been used in them. It would seem ANY product added to seal a leak would only serve as an emergency fix and not something that should be used in the long term.

I have been using Titan Essex Surefoots with six kevlar belts for a long time, never had a flat. They will stand up and run without air in them. They aren't cheap.

Tires that hold up like those are not cheap but a true case of buy once cry once. Trying to remember some that were on my old Honda Foreman 400 that were new in 1999. Those tires are still rolling with no flats.

I have a buddy that put 8ply STI Roctane tires on his Kubota RTV diesel. Put a good tire sealant in them and used that rig to hunt in Pecos County for mule deer. Did not have any flats(had to put air in them once in a while) but the second season I commented to him about his front end was squatting a bit and tires angling outwards. Asked if he had in problems yet and pointed to those front tires. He said no. After the season he called me and said he had to do a lot of work on the front axles/end. The extra weight effects different model UTV differently that is why I have not went to a heavy ply tire that is heavier. If you put a lot of hours/miles on it in rough country then might be something to look into. I am still running the factory tires on my Ranger with Multi-seal tire sealant in them. I keep a plug kit and 12v airpump in the Ranger all the time. When I have a tire loosing air to quickly I plug. The tires I had on my older Ranger were really great tires with fewer flats than these on the newer one. They were not factory tires and only 6 ply and I ran them all over that West Texas greasewood and mesquite.

Exactly, I live on a place in STX and thorns are every day. I know they are expensive, but if I was a weekend guy I sure would not want to mess with flats or slime products.

I actually put enough time/miles on the ESSEX tires to wear them out. It took about 13 years for all the lugs to be worn down but there hasn't been a day that those tires weren't rolling to one end of my place or the other. I drove it up on the trailer and took it to my tire dealer. With the estimate, "I thought damn, as much as the tires on my Dodge 2500!" The truth be told my Dodge is as old (2004) as my Mule, but the Mule has done the hard work and saved the mileage (less than 65K miles) saving my truck from the flats and scratches on its sides. From there, I didn't think any longer about the purchase.

I use to be able to buy a sealant for my tractor that would, when exposed to exterior air, dry and seal the puncture. It was a maroon to purple color and it might have been alcohol base? Does anyone know of this product?

Get something with 6 or more plys.
Most of the factory tires are good expensive 2 ply tires for plush ride.

Slime works good for most thorn holes.
Berryman's Tire Sealer works better.
Ride-On tire sealant for motorcycles also works really well and I have ran it in big heavy road bikes for years.
None of them will work when you run over a stob and punch a 1/4" or bigger hole.



One trick I learned from an old hay farmer was to "refresh" your sealant by adding a few ounces of water on occasion - that keeps it flowing around the tire and helps eliminate out of balance caused by a wad of dried up crud stuck to one side of the tire.

Another that I learned from experience is get the tallest knobs you can get.
With tall knobs, there is less chance of the thorn reaching the actual tire and causing leak.
As your knobs wear down, you have more and more flats because the air bladder is closer to the ground.

Ive had good luck with ITP Blackwater tires.

This is the best I have found to date. It seals 1/4" and a bit larger holes in the treads for me.
