I just buy my points every year. I’ll think about using them when I have enough for a decent unit.

Wyoming is just Pronghorn for me this year. 2 points for elk, so buying a 3rd this year. Thinking 2020 for elk in the Equality state.

Same as Fitzwho. Putting in for Pronghorn this year also. Building points for elk. Might have to start trying next year to pick up a elk hunt

Good luck in that pronghorn draw, we'll get population numbers in a few weeks to help with your research on areas.

New state record perhaps coming out soon for Wyoming. Word is 2 bucks over 90 inches were taken last fall. I'm waiting to here details.

Just started puting in for elk, deer and pronghorn in Wyoming. I hunt Colorado over the counter. I also put in points there as well. I will probably hunt Wyoming after 5 points for elk. But I want to hunt deer and antelope there every three. Just staying otc colorado in years I don’t.

Am I the only one on here that doesn't have a clue what you all are talking about regarding the points and draws for elk in certain states? I know that Texas hunting is different than just about everywhere else. Is there a guide or website that kind of summarizes hunting in other states? I'm particularly interested in Utah and Idaho since I have people I can stay with in both places, but neither are hunters so I can't ask them.

You might look at some other western forums, Hunt Talk or Eastman's.
Some services out there too that take care of your points and applications for a fee every year, Hunting Fool and Cabelas Tags.
Most state have a preference point system for big game hunting. Every year you apply you get a preference point if you don't draw a tag, much like the draw tags in Texas.
Usually only the top point holders get in on the tag drawing, the state put out the draw odds and point totals for everyone.
Colorado has otc tags, meaning you can just buy a tag, but not every area in the state.
Wyoming sets aside a certain percentage of almost every area and tags for a random draw that anyone can draw from regardless of PP.
Idaho may have OTC tags so check their website and look online at the other forums.

If you can find a single site with all the info in one place organized, let me know.

I've been watching a lot of Randy Newberg's youtube videos. Also a big fan of his show.

Here is a video that might help you on Wyoming

The very over-simplified answer is that draw odds are very tough in Utah and it would take many years to draw a quality tag. Idaho, however, has a great over-the-counter system and you can hunt there every year if you want.

I have 10 points and the points keep going up on me on the unit that I want to hunt.....anyone else have this issue?

Re: Wyoming Elk Draw - 02/28/18 05:16 PM

I put in and did not get drawn, have been putting in for years and used to be every other year we got drawn. But that has changed the last drawing took 2 points to get drawn and same this time. I heard they cut license quota but until details come out not 100% on that. I do know they have gone way up in price, driving this TX/WYO guy to start look else where.

Re: Wyoming Elk Draw - 02/28/18 05:33 PM

Quotas actually haven't been set yet, we did have a slight increase in NR apps this year due to the price increase.
Many great areas for 10 PP.
I would give it a year or two and see how the numbers play out. Many burned PP this year so your odds may get better in 2019 or 2020.
Give cow tags a chance if you just want meat. Cow/calf tags are reduced price and random draw.

I know a great area for 10 PP, archery only or any weapon . Public land with great access and trophy potential.
I would stay at 2-3 PP if a NR and just come hunt some areas drawn with those points. General tags are not bad ones in Wyoming.

Re: Wyoming Elk Draw - 02/28/18 06:09 PM

Wytex, Lived in Wyo and still have land there (Dubois), I just need the tag I know where the elk are. 3-4 years ago they killed that monster bull behind the WRIR with a crossbow and that seemed to put Wyo back on the map for big bulls. I long for the days of walking into the Coast to Coast and paying 25 bucks for a bull elk and black bear tag. I am not giving up but having to wait is hard for an addict. cheers
