Lake Meredith TYHP hunt

Well I am headed out this evening to the lake to set up for the Texas Youth Hunting Program Hunt.

We have six youth doing a spot and stalk hunt at the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area. It is sopose to be cool and WINDY. Please keep our youth and volunteers in your prayers.

Well we are back, and what a weekend it was.

We had two young lady's and 3 young men join us for our hunt. Three were from Huston, one from Brownsville and one from Lubbock.

We were joined by Bob Barnett of the Texas Hunting Program, Randy Spradlin who is the TPWD Hunter Ed Specialist for west Texas, and by our local Game Warden. We had exceptional guides from all around Dallas and San Antonio, as well as Bob My 14 year old son who worked hard setting up camp, cooking, braking down camp.

We had one father daughter team discussing taking Huntmaster training together, and another father wanting to take the training as well.

There was no burn ban so we had a great camp fire with plenty of socialization both nights of the camp, and great feed back on our Saturday night reflection session.

This was a spot and stock and these young hunters averaged about 16 hours of hunting, Two left before day light and returned well after dark.

All the youth but one saw deer, but unfortunately no shots were fired. Ether the shot was to long for the hunter to feel comfortable with, or such dense vegetation that they were afraid they could not find it if it ran very far. In all cases though the young hunter made the decision of shoot or not.

I am very proud of all persons involved in this hunt, it was successful on many levels, I just wish they could have taken some well deserved game home.

Sounds like good lessons were learned. Meredith is not an easy hunt, but maybe next time they'll score. Keep up the good work

Lake is way up this year between good rain last year and more timely rain this year in just the right spots plus New Mexico letting some water go down the river from their lakes

too bad no one got a shot, but I am sure they had a great time especially all the way from Houston it was probably like another world to them

It is relay cool to listen to the conversation. The discussion about "Mountains". Even the adults are amazed by the rugged beauty of this land.

I asked one of the girls if this is the only time she hunted with out a blind, she said no she had done spot and stock in Colorado. I teasingly asked her which one was the hardest, surprisingly to me she told me Lake Meredith. She told me that there is nothing but cactus to grab onto when you start sliding down.

One of the hardest lessons for youth is it's hunting not shooting! Keep it up and a special thanks to everyone that makes these hunts for the kiddos possible!

That is a tough lesson for youth. It is an important lesson though. I hunted for 3 seasons before I took my first buck as a teenager. It wasn't very big, but I am as proud of it as any buck I killed because the hours put in to finally get one.

Meredith is a tough hunt for sure. Gorgeous country, with lots of native American history. Alibates flint quarry is especially unique. Love that country.
