WHAT IF.....

WHAT IF..... - 09/14/17 10:31 PM

Few weeks ago I was at my lease filling feeders and on the way home I saw something I thought I would never see in my life. There is a high fence place not far from us that I always look at when I drive by trying to see what they have but usually all I see are some exotics and an occasional 120" or less buck. This time I was doing about 70mph and saw a buck that just blew my mind so I turned around. My Dad was with me and asked what I was doing and I told him I just saw a 300"+ non typical with points going everywere! We turned around and thankfully the buck was still there so he could see I wasn't losing my mind and I was able to video it with my phone before he got uncomfortable and started to head back into the brush.

Anyway I have watched the footage over and over again and best I can tell the deer has 42 points, 4 drop tines (one of which is 10"-12"), probably 24"+ inside spread, and best I can tell he will score 325"-350"NT.

Now for the "what if" part. With all these giant bucks being grown on deer farms now and being turned loose on high fence places for breeding, hunting, or whatever else they do with them at some point one of these giants is going to get loose and get shot on a neighboring low fence property.

Does that buck become the next state or possibly even a world record? popcorn

Doubtful if it has an ear tag with its name on it roflmao

Doubt it even if the tag is gone and there is a hole in the ear for that tag.

I actually don't have any pics, just video. I have sent the video to a few people and some say they cant see it well enough to even tell its a deer and others say they can see it just fine. I may see if I can take some screen shots of the video tomorrow. If that works out I will post some then.

A good taxidermist can fix that hole in the ear, like it was never there.

If I remember correctly you are in Coke county, is this place on highway 277?

I do hunt Coke county. I would rather not give any specifics though on the deers location. Crazy people do crazy things for deer a whole lot smaller than the one I saw.

Re: WHAT IF..... - 09/15/17 12:13 PM

Those type deer are pretty common in the pens these days.

I'm sure some "escapees" are in the books already, but any potential state or world record would be investigated, vetted, and scrutinized to the max - by both the media and B&C. The deer killed would be a known deer if it was an "escapee" and would not be allowed as a record per B&C requirements.

Many thought the giant Missouri nontypical that currently holds the first nontypical spot was an "escapee". Some still do. It was a "pick up" not taken by a hunter. B&C did a big investigation and could find no evidence of that.

A more thorny potential issue is the taking of a big animal that is an "escapee" from years back that was young and then grew to record size.

If you have an iphone and text it to an android phone , the quality goes out the window. try emailing to save the quality

The man that shot such a deer would have to be considered the greatest of all hunters, I'd think.

Re: WHAT IF..... - 09/15/17 02:05 PM

I find myself doing the same thing...I can barely stay on the road for looking for big bucks on those ranches...all I've ever seen are exotics. I saw an absolute giant bull elk a few years ago just standing by the fence along the highway and the thought of that thing escaping has been my recurring dream....or nightmare....

I don't know much, but I can state this with confidence....let that thing escape and walk within 300yds of me and it'll be the quickest decision I've ever made.... rifle

Don't know where in Coke county you are, but we've certainly got a lot of those ranches around us too....

Re: WHAT IF..... - 09/15/17 02:32 PM

I hunt Coke county and there are quite a few HF ranches there. I saw three different properties just last year that put up HF. I too keep an eye out when driving by them and I have seen a number of exotics over the years but like you I rarely see WTs and when I do they have never been much to speak of much less turning around to take another look but if I saw one like you described I too would have gone back to make sure I wasn't hallucinating.

Re: WHAT IF..... - 09/15/17 02:59 PM

One of my leases is about a mile from a really good HF place. Several deer taken off of that place have been posted on here. Anyway, about 3 years ago we started seeing all kinds of strange bucks. We had a couple of 1.5 year old 6 points that had drop tines, 2.5 year olds with all kinds of kickers and odd points. Last year my buddy got a HUGE 8 point with his bow. I haven't seen the escapee(s) that started all of this, but I'm definitely seeing the benefits. I think in the next couple of years, there will be a massive "free range" buck taken in the area.

Re: WHAT IF..... - 09/15/17 03:56 PM

I got a buddy in Erath county and he has a large HF operation that butts up to his LF place. During the rut you can rattle close to the fence and have multiple 200+ inch deer come up to the fence line. Genetic monsters but still cool to see

Re: WHAT IF..... - 09/15/17 08:09 PM

Well trying to get some freeze frame shots from computer to phone didn't go so well. Here is some really poor quality proof though.

I almost feel like those guys getting the blurry Big Foot pics. The footage on my computer is actually pretty decent though.

It makes you wonder how those guys get through the brush. That is an absolute te monster. I'd be shaking from buck fever so bad that I'd probably miss, then no one would believe the story.

That is a BIG ONE, Amazing how they can grow so much bone in a few months

Re: WHAT IF..... - 09/16/17 03:10 PM

Deer are getting bigger on LFs all of the time. With ranches HFed on three sides, high protein food plots, crops and protein feeders, it is just a matter of time before the next record deer is killed. Good genetics are on LFs too, some seem to think that the HFers stole them all.

Re: WHAT IF..... - 09/16/17 09:08 PM

There are many breeders who have bucks like this. We looked at a property a few years ago, and the breeder currently on site had 2 large bucks, one scoring over 280. It was the biggest antlered white tail I had ever seen in person. This deer was almost a pet, as you could walk up to it at the fence. I know of other places that "hunt" high fence with deer close to this size. It's a simple "If you build it" they will come!"

Re: WHAT IF..... - 09/17/17 01:45 PM

As usual I will possibly make some people upset, but I have to cheer for the buck, hope he spreads in genes around the county and dies a natural death of old age and feeds some coyotes. Anyone seeing this old fellow in the wild is very fortunate. I would rather a school bus full of young future hunters see this fellow walking the wild than one person hanging his head in their den.

He's not "in the wild". He's in a pen. There are lots of places young people can see bucks like this all over the state. They would not be seeing anything that relates to the natural world if they see them though.

Re: WHAT IF..... - 09/17/17 04:18 PM

Not trying to one up anyone, but I see these class of deer pretty regularly. Most do not have any tags because they were born in the pasture. Yes they will jump the fence if pressured. One of my neighbors shot an escapee a couple of years ago. Scored just over 250".Pretty cool to watch these giant deer while waiting on a 130" buck to show.

Neighbors have just under 2000 acres under hi fence

I was referencing the last paragraph of the OP. The "if" it got loose. That was the question, not if anyone had seen a high fence or big deer. I still maintain if the buck got loose I hope he spreads his genes all over the county.

That deer may spread his seed, but you will not suddenly going get 300”+ deer, not even close. There are good genetics already out there, they just aren't forced to eat a high protein diet.

OK. I admit I do not know what this deer eats. I am certain every monster deer in the universe is forced to eat high protein. Is it pumped down the throat like force feeding a goose? What is the protein % being fed this deer?

Re: WHAT IF..... - 09/22/17 02:53 AM

It probably has an ear tag. The land owner will put it in a 2 acre pasture with a feeder and an enclosed heated or air conditioned stand and get 30 or 40 grand for the hunt and harvest. Welcome to high fence "hunting".

Re: WHAT IF..... - 09/23/17 01:23 PM

when my wife first saw the video..she says "whats those limbs hanging all over his head"..she had no idea..i honestly dont think another deer in this country could be any bigger than this buck..and live..he couldnt hold his head up..lol also justin..i almost wrecked several times looking at the area we use to drive to the lease..saw nothing..there is miles and miles of high fence i never noticed...my wife has no clue about hunting ethics..she says.."get some wire cutters" can you imagine what a straw of his stuff would cost?

I like this idea
Find cheap leases next to high fence and shoot the tame tagged deer I love the new hunting
