HOW CLOSE DO YOU PARK FROM YOUR BLIND

HOW CLOSE DO YOU PARK FROM YOUR BLIND - 08/16/17 06:12 AM

Just a question as I broke my leg this year. Some days I can have my partner drop me off but not always.

Thanks for the replies.

I hunt on a highline at my lease that has a gas pipeline connecting to it. I park my truck on the dirt road, then ride my 4wheeler down the pipeline until it hits the highline, then hide it, then I walk the remainder. Its about a good 250 yd walk after that. Doesn't bother me yet.

I park 10 yards or less from the stand typically.

Closest I park during rifle season is about 100 yards. During bow season I pretty well walk every where I go.

Re: HOW CLOSE DO YOU PARK FROM YOUR BLIND - 08/16/17 11:56 AM

I've had leg and hip problems for several years and I made a spot where I could pull up right next to the blind.
I've shot plenty of deer and hogs doing that, and it doesn't seem to effect my hunting at all.
I've parked and watched deer almost walk up and smell the corn in the bed of my truck.
Most of the time the deer where I hunt associate a vehicle with food since we feed the roads and senderos and the deer seem to be waiting on us to pass by.

About 2-300 yards away.

Re: HOW CLOSE DO YOU PARK FROM YOUR BLIND - 08/16/17 12:13 PM

I park from 150 - 300 yards away from 1 blind depending on road conditions. The other blind maybe 20yards. Completely different setups.

My stands are in different directions from feeders so I can use different stands depending on wind direction.
They stands have been in place for a while and have brush growing up around them.
I have a little alley that is 90 degrees to the feeder to get to the stand.
I drive right into this alley and park next to the ladder and step right off 4wheeler onto steps.

Keeps my scent off the ground and also helps minimize exposure to those saber-toothed chiggers and ticks.

0-400 yards for different set ups. I have several places that my truck is my blind, deer & hogs are used to it and don't pay it any attention.

Re: HOW CLOSE DO YOU PARK FROM YOUR BLIND - 08/16/17 02:22 PM

I'm parking my Mule about 80 yards behind my blind. It's below a tank dam and I have a pretty thick mess of mesquites between blind and the dam. I've cut a good path through there that zig zags a few time. I've parked. Whacked the roll bar with a rifle barrel. Dropped stuff. Peed and made tons of racket at the parking spot and have walked in to see deer all over my feeder. Good luck with your recovery. I broke mine 15 years ago this past Friday. I remember my daughter was 8 and she'd carry my rifle for me while I crutched to a popup blind on my moms place in poolville. Crutches make good shooting sticks.

On average >400 yards.

Less then 100. Just depends on how skittish your animals are.

Re: HOW CLOSE DO YOU PARK FROM YOUR BLIND - 08/16/17 02:38 PM

Really depends on how your blind is situated. For 30+ years, I walked a 1/4 mile to my blind because I didn't want to drive through the area I hunted. When we we moved to a different place, my blind was built on a cliff top that overlooked a creek bed. I drove my ATV right up to it and walked maybe 10 ft.

Re: HOW CLOSE DO YOU PARK FROM YOUR BLIND - 08/16/17 02:41 PM

We park about 50 feet from the stand. I hacked out an area in the brush just big enough to hide the mule. We've seen deer walk right past the mule and never look at it.

Yep, we have 4 blinds and each one is different - longest hike is 1/2 mile and shortest is about 50 yards.

Re: HOW CLOSE DO YOU PARK FROM YOUR BLIND - 08/16/17 03:03 PM

Just depends on the setup. Usually 100-300 yards. I try to be parked out of the immediate area of the stand and a couple tree lines or clearings away. Far enough, based on vegetation/topography, that an animal probably would not associate the vehicle with the stand area. I don't really know that it makes any difference. If you aren't mobile for whatever reason, I think you could park close and not worry too much about it.

Just hunt and get there best you can which would include driving right up to stand if you have to. Like others have said just depends on your stand set up but I've driven right up and stepped off 4 wheeler or truck door on to ladder of blinds and deer/hogs paid vehicle no attention.

One place they drop me off and another place right next to it.

Re: HOW CLOSE DO YOU PARK FROM YOUR BLIND - 08/16/17 05:05 PM

Totally depends on the stand. My main blind I park 250-300 yards away. One blind has multiple feeders in several directions, and we have parked directly under the blind or about 400 yards away (just depends on our mood!). But generally I'll park far enough to be out of the general area of the blind, which is 200-400 yards away.

I also used to walk hundred of yards. My best deer ever was 15 minutes after my wife dropped me at the foot of the tree stand.
These Texas deer love the sound of the corn wagon coming.

You jump deer with your vehicle they won't go far. If you jump deer walking from your vehicle to your blind after parking it, all bets are off, plus you just laid down your scent for 400 yards.
As mentioned it all depends on your setup, but I know for a fact deer get used to vehicles faster than humans walking around in the woods.

Not at current place, but when on lease in Knox County there was a place I wanted to try, but didn't have a blind in the area. I rode Polaris in, then draped it with camo net making a ground blind, and sat behind it up against a corner post. Had several occasions where deer walked within 20 yards and never paid any attention to me.

Re: HOW CLOSE DO YOU PARK FROM YOUR BLIND - 08/18/17 12:12 AM

Depends, couple of stands on cliffs, can park 20 yards from and be safe in a truck;
Others I can park a 4 wheeler under the stand, literally, by design
A few take a 1/4 mile walk no matter what

Re: HOW CLOSE DO YOU PARK FROM YOUR BLIND - 08/18/17 12:21 AM

I walk anywhere from 1/4 to 3/4 of a mile to the stand.

Walk to blind from parking spot is 800 yards on the road or around 600 yards as the crow flies.

Truck makes for a very comfortable blind that I have killed lots of critters from and it is heated with good windows. When not hunting from the truck I usually walk 400 to 800 yards

Just depends but, my main blind about 50' blind is on a tank damn and truck is down behind it where there is now a mesquite flat. Another blind is a 700 yard walk and a few others you need someone to drop you off so you don't leave your scent...

15 yards from my blind, I cleared out a section of heavy brush to drive The ranger in. Deer have never noticed it, they walk by all the time.

I park at cabin and walk to blinds. Closest is 150 yards, next, 300 yards, last is a half mile.

Have had several Deer walk right past my truck with this on and not look at it twice.

Had not given much thought to spreading my sent over a long distance while walking in. I agree that critters seem to be less suspicious of a vehicle than anything on 2 legs.

I have a few different places I'll park depending on wind. All are at least 200 yds walk some are further.

The pasture I hunt has all sorts of old farm equipment, trucks, etc., that have been laying around for years, so I can literally park my white Silverado next to the blind and not raise any suspicions.

1/2 mile. I hunt up north and park long way from tree stand

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I was reminded that my older brother shot his best muzzleloader buck in southern Michigan while worming in his truck listning to Bob and Tom. He did turn the radio down when the shot presented itself.

Thanks all!

Pull my Ranger in the brush 50 yards from the blind. Ranch hands use Rangers daily and pay no attention.

Re: HOW CLOSE DO YOU PARK FROM YOUR BLIND - 09/29/17 06:43 PM

I saw a stand the other day that was in the middle of a 300 acre meadow. Parking out of sight would have required a half mile walk. I had the idea of building a small garage under it to park in.
