Gander Mountain Closing

Gander Mountain Closing - 03/17/17 11:01 PM

Heard they are closing multiple stores and filing for bankruptcy. Do you think we can expect for them to start having some killer sales or will it be business as usual? I heard they are looking for a buyer so thinking that could be a reason they may not end up doing huge clearance sales right away
Posted By: Wilhunt

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 03/18/17 01:14 AM

I would think there will be some good sales. Even if they find a buyer chances are they will get more money for their mdse. at markdown opposed to what a new buyer would pay.

Still over priced.

Close em all
Bad display
Poor customer service

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 03/19/17 12:41 AM

The one near me had great customer service, almost too good. I feel like I get asked if I need help with anything every 5 steps.

Never bought much from them, but I'd imagine they would have some sales.

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 03/19/17 02:28 AM

I agree their prices have always been terrible. Hence the reason they are probably going out of business. They are having a sale which ends tonight where if you spend 50 bucks you get 20 dollars off. Promo code is GETLUCKY. I just bought an Avian X Fly Away pack for 54 bucks (That's final price including tax and shipping was free). Still kicking myself for not jumping on some of the sales Midway was having at the end of the season

I stopped in the one in Corsican a few times when it was open....the only thing worse than their prices was the pathetic customer service......

Sorry but won't be missed by me......

Customer service has never been a strong point there.

20 years ago they were one of the elite stores it's a shame their crap now

I hate to here about that, I have always had good luck at the Amarillo store.

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 03/20/17 05:36 PM

Half the time it's hard to know just how bad the prices are...they don't seem to put the price on a bunch of their products. Then they have the price match guarantee on guns. That always irritated me, just know your market and don't price your product 20% higher than everybody else locally. Then don't say you'll match it, and then put a bunch of qualifiers on it.

One of the best rifles I ever bought at a great price was at Gander Mountain --- in the parking lot from a private seller I arranged to meet there!

I'm amazed that they aren't closing the one in Spring.

Heck I've bought two pistols from there in the last few years hundreds cheaper than I could have anywhere else.

I've never seen anything at GM even on sale that Academy's daily prices didn't beat.

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 03/20/17 07:36 PM

Bought two

M&p 40.
Kimber cdp ii pro

Find me those deals and I'll buy every single one of them

Given they were used but you don't see those prices even used
Posted By: jhenderson

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 03/20/17 07:37 PM

Not saying they usually have good prices but I've been lucky. Paid $225 for a M&p 40 from there and a kimber for almost $1000 off what they sell it for new.

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 03/20/17 09:06 PM

I go into the one here but don't buy much but I have found some good deals in the past...CZ American 550 .243 NIB $499.00 and bought my wife a Kimber 45 last year for $630.00 if I remember correctly. Yes, they are too expensive but I have found a few deals over the years.

They had nice camo gear though. So much for the "lifetime" warranty.

My local GM has their going out of business sign up and signs that say "up to 30% off," so which means you can get a picture frame for almost free. Doubt anything of value is on sale.

Plenty of brick and mortar retailers doing just fine....ones that are over priced and have poor customer service deserve the same fate.....free market baby....do it better than the next guy or die as a result of your actions/inactions.....

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 03/25/17 09:40 AM

Really a shame that nice venues like their stores are such crap as a result of poor management and top level decisions. With a little help from the top end, they could be a real contender in the marketplace...but at this point they are ultimately doomed. I'm surprised that the Tyler GM isn't on the list of places being closed. You hardly see any cars in the parking lot even. I have walked through that store numerous times just looking around and couldn't see anything I would be willing to buy at the prices they are charging. If you find something you are interested in, there is a good chance it won't have a price on it and you would have to wander around the store trying to find someone to determine the price....and then it would be outrageous.
Competitive pricing and good customer service is the key to success in stores such as these and they fail on both counts.

Seems they are always within a block or two of an academy too. Price as high as they are on majority of stuff combine pretty crappy customer service it's not going to end well.

Brand new store in Frisco has zero customers on any given day.

Their GM branded gear is excellent, but best price is on sale.

I just got their flyer in the Sunday paper. I thought surely it would be full of bargains. Nope, nothing at all that made in want to get in the car and go to the store.....and I was looking for an excuse to go.

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 03/27/17 06:03 PM

Seems to be at least 10% off everything in the store. All fishing stuff was 20%. Deer stands, feeders, and a few other things were 30% off. Still that puts the price higher than Academy.
I did find a few camo items on a clearance rack, then an additional 10% off made it a good buy.
Posted By: JLP83

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 03/28/17 12:21 AM

I got an email from them a few weeks ago advertising 15% off everything in the place besides guns, ammo and anything already on sale. I ended up ordering 3 reconyx game cams online from them and saved quite a bit of money. Good time to make large purchases.
Posted By: JimBridger

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 03/28/17 08:14 PM

I remember when Gander Mountain was the best catalogue store around until they were bought out by Cabelas. When they re-emerged as a retail store they had a good line of products at a fair price. Their end of year sales were fantastic, especially on their guide gear products. I even bought a lightly used Remington 11-87 Mossy Oak Camo turkey gun with screw in choke tubes for $247.
When they brought out the Gander Girls, my wife said they were doomed to failure.lol Not long after that they started to cater to other outdoor recreational activities and began removing all of their fish and game mounts.
It's No wonder they're closing their doors.
I personally haven't seen a good sale at GM for several years.

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 04/08/17 12:58 AM

Stopped by the one by me today and it doesn't appear they are trying to get rid of their inventory. Everything I'd be interested in is only 10% off which of course is still priced higher than other stores. Only the well I guess you can't have too much of _____ is 30% off.
Posted By: maximum

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 04/08/17 01:12 AM

when the corsicana store first opened they had
some decent pricing. i bought a couple of guns
there and several knives. then they started down
that cullum & boren/oshman's path with the casual
clothes and softball/tennis/etc. and gifty type crap.
what a shame that the executive-types can run a
business in the ground as fast or faster than
knowledgeable employees can take it to the top.

went on Saturday to the store in SugarLand. no real deals just 10% off was normal a few items were 20% off really only equates to a dollar or two off. wonder what they will do with guns if they don't sell?

Not all are closing, stopped by one the other day and they said they were remaining open (for now)

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 04/12/17 08:02 PM

We talked to the manager at the one on 290 in Cypress the other day. While their store is closing, they will be the last in the Houston area to close. As all the others close, they will send the majority of their inventory to this one to sell. The only one in the Houston area that will remain open is the one in Spring off 45. All others will be shutdown. So me and the wife decided to go see if they had any deals. Almost the entire store is 10-20% off at this point, but he did say they will go lower eventually, but inventory may be limited (sizes, colors etc). I'll be checking back in periodically to keep an eye on a few things, but for now, not many deals other than some items are 20% off. Ammo and guns are NOT on sale.....

The Mesquite Tx store is a sad site. You can see a Academy from their parking lot. I have never seen more than 10 customers in that store at one time. They once had CCI 22 mag ammo for $22 a box while Academy was selling the same ammo for $13. They had a Savage rifle I wanted in the used rack. It was priced higher than what Academy wanted for it new. I am shocked that store is not closing.

The Tyler location is still open. I was there today. I started to buy some braided line but thought $30 was a bit steep for 30lb 300 yards.
Academy is just a jump away......Same brand 30lb 300yds. $20 33% more expensive at Gander.
That's just a shame.

Our new Academy here in Huntsville, AL opened this weekend. Should be the final coffin nail in our Gander Mountain store. Place was always a ghost town on the three occasions I shopped there.

Wife & I were in GM in Lake Worth last week. They were giving out 15% coupons, but most every thing we looked at you could take 15% off and still buy it cheaper at Academy.......

.....and along those lines the new Academy in Weatherford is opening this week!

Could be good considering the majority of people on here dont like the prices. Bankruptcy court has to approve everything(maybe today) but Camping world is said to be closing the vast majority of them. From what I read they are going to liquidate all the stores and go from there.

Prices always seemed a touch high with no sale but my problem was always the displays and not being able to find anything. Could be some great prices if the truly liquidate them.

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 05/04/17 08:35 PM

Im pretty sure when something in Gander is 20% off they just add 20% to the starting price to make it seem like your getting a discount when your not.

Re: Gander Mountain Closing - 05/09/17 04:47 AM

It looks like there was a last minute buyer pf Gander Mountain's name and leases. http://www.reporternews.com/story/money/...ores/101409474/

Quote:

When the St. Paul, Minn.-based Gander Mountain filed for bankruptcy in March, it said it would shut down 32 stores in 11 states over the next several weeks. At the time, the company's 160 stores employed 1,280 full-time and part-time workers.
Before the bankruptcy, Gander Mountain has stores in 26 states.

Lemonis is CEO of Camping World Holdings, which operates a network of stores catering to recreational vehicle owners. Camping World made the bid for Gander Mountain.
In his CNBC role, Lemonis is seen investing in distressed, businesses around the country and then personally taking a hand in trying to turn them around, often butting heads with the management in the process. When it comes to Gander Mountain, Lemonis said he doesn't mind starting over with all new merchandise.

"We want to help the liquidators sell their inventory. We don't want to be disruptive to that, but we also don't want employees thinking that they're all losing their jobs," Lemonis said. "I am definitely going to protect my people at all costs. No matter what."

I dropped by the lake worth location today that's closing. Although everything was marked down it was still higher than that of academy's prices. It's really kind of sad because it's the closest and most convenient outdoor store to me in azle. Seems like every time I go in there I come out empty handed like I did today.

I went to the Arlington store last week and got 3 dozen arrows for 60 bucks, now granted those are store brand. But, they are carbon fiber and made by Easton, and when you have a 10 y.o. daughter and a 12 y.o. nephew flinging arrows downrange....cheap arrows never hurt!

Same here in Spring just outside of Houston. A large sign said "Up to 40% Off". Couldn't find anything in the store with that discount. Nearly everything was just 10% off their normal inflated prices. Won't be back. Let'em crater.
