Scent Blocker: What do you recommend?

What scent blocker do you all recommend? Is it true that deer can smell the soap on your skin or the shampoo from your most recent shower? When I was a kid my uncle would say take a shower but don't use soap or shampoo, just how water. Is this hunter's folklore or true advice and wisdom passed on?

The wind is your friend. All that scent blocker scent free stuff is a gimmick to get your $$$.

Not what you wanted to hear, I'm sure, but most folks here will tell you to save your money on all the carbon/silver suits. You'll never be able to eliminate your human scent, but I feel you can reduce it for less than $20/year. Then hunt the wind (and thermals) the best you can.

The only thing I use is vanilla extract and water...I've used it for years and it has always seemed to work. I'd save my money on everything else.

I got busted twice Saturday morning. Sunday morning I decided to try Nose Jammer.

First deer was a yearling forkhorn. He got in my wind at 70-80 yards and wasn't sure what to do. He never blew but was pretty confused. He finally ran off but later came back, but would only get about 120 yards away and was still concerned.

Second deer was a yearling doe. She got my wind at about 70 yards and stopped, tested the wind a bunch, but also did not blow. She slipped off at an angle into the woods and did not return.

Third deer was a doe and fawn at 30 yards. The doe really tested the wind but never blew and was not overly agitated. She stood there for at least five minutes and got to 20 yards before making a circle through the woods to go around me. They came back out about 70 yards upwind and went on their way.

Fourth deer was a buddy to the first forkhorn. He came out at 200 yards and walked into the wind. At 50 yards he froze, got really confused, and then ran back up his trail at a good clip. He stopped several times looking around, but also never blew at me.

It was certainly new to the deer. Did they get upset because it was something different in an area they didn't expect? They certainly didn't identify me well enough to blow, but still most changed their plans.

I suspect it could work if you used it a lot and they got used to it, but they're also going to use it to pattern you eventually.

Thoughts?

Hunt the wind. You can buy scent eliminators too. It won't hurt. I use the brand Scent Killer, and I just don't put on anything that would make me stand out as far as smell.

I recommend none. Just be consistent with your smell every time you head out and they will get used to your scent.

^^^ This! I get busted all the time, even with my scent suits and lots of spray. I started using the Nose Jammer, and it truly works. I spray it on me, on some trees next to me, and into the air. I'll spray more in the air about every 15-30 minutes. I had deer directly down wind of me and would continue to walk in close to me down wind, where I would normally get busted. I am sold on the Nose Jammer.

The other thing that I want to try is the Ozone maker. I have talked to several hunters who use it, and seen videos and reports on it where hunters go into the field in street clothes and cologne on, and have deer in close to them down wind. They turn off the unit, and within 30 seconds get busted due to the scent. They are not cheap, but effective. I may be using this next season.

We purposely set up our blinds/feeders and tripods brush blinds etc. for bow hunting on an east west direction from each other, we don't have problems with the majority of our prevailing winds. I have a few senderos that are good for a north wind but not a south and vise versa, just only feed the one that is good for the current wind.

I don't use any kind of scent eliminator, I go to the blind in the same clothes I wear/work in all day and we don't have a problem getting winded. Also our sets are closer than the majority you hear about on here 85-110 yards.

Just because you can't smell it does not mean they can't smell it. They have a much more developed smeller than we humans do.
There is no way to be truly scent free. You can limit the amount of scent but never be scent free.

I like to visit the feeder as much as possible and even tie a tshirt to my bow stand to allow them to get used to my scent.

Deer have more of an issue with unfamiliar scents and new scents than a particular scent being present.
They are very in tune with changes in their environment.

I use cedar scent but I also try to smell like my blind. I put cedar blocks and in one blinds, I have a cedar wall. I also spray my blind with cedar. Cedar keeps out bugs so it has dual purpose. The animals are use to the smell. Lot easier to smell like something else than cover your scent.

I also where rubber boots.

That is about it.

I think it is more effective to wear the correct type of camo to and from your box stand.

Sat in a blind this weekend that unfortunately had been inhabited by a bunch of rats and had an overwhelming smell of rat pee. Let loose a cloud of Nose Jammer (purchased based on the recent recommendation of Chad) inside the blind. Let it air out for 5 minutes and then sat in there rest of the afternoon and it was very pleasant. Thankfully, I can report it successfully jammed my nose very effectively and the blind was very pleasant the rest of the day. Shot a pig about 25 yards from the blind, so it must have worked ok. Nose Jammer actually smells like vanilla so it was pretty pleasant other than I was craving oatmeal cookies and a cup of coffee all afternoon.

Crush up cedar leaves if you have them

PSA. Nose Jammer is STRONG! DO NOT get it on your clothes and then get in your truck! I didn't spray it directly on me and yet I still smelled vanilla hours later.
