Hello to all from kentucky.
First let me say WOW! What a hunting community, and what an absolute wealth of information.
The reason i joined is over the next few years i will be whittling on the bucket list. The first planned trip will be next year for south texas whitetail, i have already made plans with an outfitter and it looks like that is going to happen.
The next adventure on the list is Nilgai...and that one is going to take some research as i dont even know where to start. I would like to start making ans for scheduled time off and where to go. I would appreciate any help anybody can give me as to best time of year to hunt nilgai and reputable operations that offer nilgai hunting.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome, theres a couple trustworthy quality outfitters here on the forum that offer nilgai. Otherwise i would do the king ranch. Gonna need a larger caliber to hunt them.

Post in the outfitters section on the forum that you are looking for a nilgai hunt

I live on lake cumberland in south central kentucky. We have great deer hunting, tons of turkeys, bears are starting to become a nuisance. But i have wanted to hunt South Texas (for anything lol) since i cam remember. This is my 40th deer season and thanks to the deer gods i am already tagged out with a great 8pt and 3 does.

Ky is a really beautiful state. Go there to see relatives every few years. Been actually 10 years since last visit.

They are just a bit further north in Berea.

Yes we are blessed with lake cumberland, fantastic striper fishing, world class smallmouth and one of the best trout rivers in the country. I live in paradise and never take it for granted, but there is this gnawing desire to visit texas (i should say "re-visit" as i did my basic training in san antonio). Ive got a feeling when i do finally make it to texas i probably wont want to leave lol

You will probably rethink that comment about mid July.

Especially when you are on a tractor working on your food plot.

Re: New to the forum - 11/01/16 05:51 PM

How far are you from Mammoth Cave and Barren River Reservoir ...

Plenty of great outfitters in that section that will set you up.
Try and plan your trip for Late December or January to increase the activity if you are hunting true South Texas up

I would vote they move the season to end in March in STX roflmao

welcome There is something mystical about those big S.TX bucks in that God forsaken brush country up
I was told there were three things that part of the state will do to you, either stick, sting or bite you nuts

Re: New to the forum - 11/01/16 07:32 PM

Not far from Barren River Lake, couple hrs from Mammoth Cave.
Without knowledge of peak hunting times i was leaning towards early november so i could be back in kentucky before the thanksgiving duck opener. But iight have to rethink my timing. January is something i could do especially if all the duck waters freeze over here. January here is practically in the books and a distant memory for deer hunting. So would most of you try to shoot for Jamuary for deer? Is this the rut?
And once again....i cant thank all of you enough for your time and help

It depends on if you are really going to S.TX brush country (the golden triangle/border counties)as the rut is usually late. As previously stated Jan. If you are looking into outfitters and properties, know that MLD III properties can offer rifle hunting in to February. Good luck

Re: New to the forum - 11/03/16 02:20 AM

yep, in my 40 years of chasing, missing, spooking big kentucky bucks ive come very very close to the magic booner mark but fell just short with the closest being 168 6/8s, and 4 more above the 160 mark. they always looked like "shoo-ins" on the hoof but turned out just shy.
ive always got that goal to try for lol
