Any Pronghorn Hunters Out There?

I got lucky and was issued a couple permits for yoakum and Cochran counties. Gonna head out there the end of this month. This will be my first time hunting pronghorn and I'd welcome any tips or suggestions.

I killed one several years ago in AZ. They can see you from 157 miles away.

Seriously, they have awesome eyesight. The guide we used had a cardboard cow that we held up and used for cover. It worked amazingly well. Depending on the terrain you are hunting a shot inside 150 yards should be easy to get. Just plan your stalk accordingly, use your head and be PATIENT. A Texas antelope would be a trophy indeed. Seriously? I know they are curious critters but is this something you've tried with success? Elaborate please!

I haven't drawn a tag yet in the 2 years I've put in, maybe this year will be the one.

I went to the Panhandle and shot one back in '11, Hutchinson Co. Gross Score of 74. All I can tell you is that they have excellent Eye sight so getting close takes patients and Think "Out of the Box"!! Also I noticed the Bigger Bucks seemed to have a harem of does around them.

So yeah, we're pronghorn hunters.

The ballon or a white towel works sometimes. They will walk right up to your gun muzzle.
But I think it may be illegal in Texas.
I Wyoming I shot one with a .357 S&W a few years back and we flagged it from about 300 yards with a red cap. Shot it at 37 yards.
Trick is not to let the antelope see you.

I just got this one a couple of weeks ago in New Mexico. They are not hard to hunt if you a conforable with a 300 yard shot.

Thanks for the complements on the pronghorn. I consider two of the most important pieces of equipment for prong horn hunting is s good range finder and binos. The distances fool me all the time. I tend to think the pronghorns are Further away than They are. My most recent hunt I shot right over the back of a really nice one that I thought was 350 yards away and it was only 225, when I ranged where he was crossing the fence later. I think it has something to do with the fact there nothing for reference as where they live there tends to be no trees. The binos are important because the difference between an ordinary pronghorn and a true trophy is just a couple of inches. They can be difficult for most people yto judge.

I have found that they tend not to be scared of trucks and will only go a few hundred yards if spooked by a truck. Then turn and stare at the truck. This seems to give you time to get out/set up and shoot. If they see you walking toward them they are usually gone. I have heard about the cow cardboard cut out from several people but have not personnaly tried it.

I am headed to Wyoming in a couple of weeks with three pronghorn tags (1 buck/2 does). I was thinking about taking a piece of cardboard, cutting out a cow shape and trying out, the cow silhouette thing on one some does.

I've got a couple life size pronghorn cut outs and one cow I had printed at FastSigns.

My long range rig is dialed in tight and I'm good past 300 yds if the wind cooperates.

If there's a feed truck on the Ranch Red, slip that guy a couple bills to ride along

Antelope hunting is not particularly hard as long as you're a decent shot at 200+ yards. Good binoculars and range finder will make all the difference. I have shot quite a few over the years.

I've hunted them off and on in the Trans-Pecos with both rifle and bow & arrow. Longest shot I've ever taken with a rifle was 168 yards. Closest I've seen taken was my dad with a 30-30 Win, 35 yards. All spot and stalk. Panhandle hunting is probably longer.

Jensent I love that lazy horn one. i have only seen a few like that over the years and would get one mounted if I ever get one.

I've shot a lot of speed goats in my day and can say that this is an animal that if you chase and spook it will taste like the south end of a north bound skunk. Try your best to use the terrain and not push the goat. Bring lots of ice, tag it and get the pics done quickly, quarter it where it fell and get it in ice!

Hey Redsnake. I've killed two goats on a ranch that is on the Yoakum and Cochran county line. Those sand dunes can make judging distance a little tricky. Good binos and a range finder are pretty valuable as well as a spotting scope. Last year's pronghorn required crawling about half a mile through grass burs. It would not have been possible without leather gloves and brush pants. Good luck!

My Texas panhandle (Stratford) Pronghorn from last year. 285 yards across the wheat field. if I remember correctly he grossed around 74", aged at 4.3 yrs by TPWD.

I harvest quite a few, they are our second favorite game meat. Ive use archery, flintlock, whitworth muzzle loader, .223-to-30/378wby, 357mag at a few feet .........

They are wonderful to hunt for a lazy guy like me, I don't need to be out "on stand" an hour before light or ??? They are on the open prairie most of which is very broke so stalking is do-able.
