Mountain lion question

Went to the lease about 20 miles west of Ozona. Me and my grandpa were riding around and saw 2 mountain lions about 300 yards from my stand. They were running together is this normal? And are there quite a few In This area? Just had me a little on edge as they were the first ones I've saw in person. They didn't run just crouched down and walked behind some mesquite and we didn't see them again, but I didn't go look real hard either haha.

Not surprised of a sighting in that area. When you see a pair together it's usually a female and cub. Cubs hang with their momma until they are more than a year old. Keep an eye out during deer season and you might get a shot at one.

Right. Mating season should start in December and go through March, which would be about the only time you would see a male and female together, and not for very long. So seeing a pair now is probably the momma and offspring.

They're definitely around Ozona. Keep your eyes peeled and gun at the ready....Might want to get a human face mask and put it over the back of your head, like they do in India, to keep 'em from jumpin' out and gettin' ya, on the the way to the stand

Mountain lion sightings have been reported just about everywhere in Texas the last couple of years. But just because you saw them now doesn't mean you will see them again. These lions can travel long distances in search of an area with plenty of food (high deer populations or a rancher with lots of goats.)

Could be a mama and youngster or two youngster. If they appeared to be about the same size, I would bet on the later. This year's youngsters should still have dim spots and are beginning to hunt on their own but you can Mom was not far away. Just give me a call the next time you see them and we will make them climb. I also have a good friend in Ozona that has cat hounds as well.
Like Hunter Daddy says, they could be several miles away as they tend to travel, although a mother and cubs won't travel nearly as far as a mature male. The area from IH 10 south down through Pandale and west typically holds lions because it is rugged, remote and lots of game. The Pecos River is a natural highway for them.

Nothing like walking in the dark to you stand in the morning and hearing one of those guttural growls. Keep your head on a swivel.

They are usually silent before they attack.

The pecos river is our boundary line on the lease so this makes since. With the canyons we have on the place don't know if dogs would do any good because there's no way to get to the bottom without rappelling down haha

I've seen a black bear just South of Ozona just last year.

There are zero black panthers of the feline variety, however.

Yes, you can hunt that country along the river with dogs. Lions tend to travel along the rim above the river but will have certain draws or canyons that allow them to get up and down. It is amazing to me but lions are such creatures of habit. If you can identify which headers they use to get up and down, all of the lions will use that same one. I have hunted just across the river over in Terrell County and have a good friend that lives south of Ft. Lancaster on the river. Rugged country but if you can cut a fresh track when not over 100 degrees and the wind blowing can catch a lion there.
