I'd just like to go and take pics, hunting would cost me way too much $$$. Pics are a lot cheaper to frame then shipping those animals and having them mounted.
Have fun and enjoy!
Good luck and enjoy yourself. You will have a great time.
The Eastern Cape part of South Africa is 100% malaria free!
Looking forward to the pictures and report.

Have fun. I have friends that hunted with them a few years ago and they had a fantastic time. Take twice as many pictures as you think you should!!!

Re: Africa Here I come - 05/19/16 03:28 PM
Actually the hunting is fairly cheap... The big expense is getting anything home.

You enjoy it. It's gods gift to hunters in my opinion
Here is the rifle I am taking
Now that's sweet. That barrel finish is awesome. Makes me want one. Jealous of your trip. Looking forward to updates. I hope to be going to SA 2018!

Derrick, I think that is one of the best looking weapons you have made
cept for the rusty barrel

Can't wait to see what you put down, just stay away from "tame" lions sir
That's awesome. My wife and I are currently sitting in Istanbul turkey waiting on our connecting flight to Joberg for our honeymoon safari.

Sweet rig. Hope you have a premium case for it. Joberg airport baggage handlers have a reputation for doing horrible things to rifle cases.

Made it .. but had to pay off the rifle guy 40 bucks to get the rifle in. They wrote down HR2 on my serial number instead of HRZ when I sent in my paperwork. Was a little stressful Next time I will put a strike through my "z" The state side guys did not even question that it was a "z"

That rifle is a 24 inch 6.5 creed using the 140 ELD match bullets. the other rifle is a 28 nosler with 175 lr accubonds

Derrick's kudu:
Here are my pics working on the 55 others of my buddies but photo bucket is being a pain
Bushbuck at 320 yards
Kudu at 710 yards
impala at 430 yards
caracal cat at point blank
Eland at 198, then 250, then 335, then 420 (they are tuff)
Black wildebeest 425
Nyala at 310

Re: Africa Here I come - 05/31/16 10:04 PM
Beautiful, dark bushbuck. I think that's a black wildebeest. You're nyala beats mine by...a bunch. And I'm envious of your caracal. Good shooting young man.
Your right had a typing error there. Thanks the Nyala was 27.5 on the longest side the Bushbuck was 15, Eland 38, Kudu 46.5

Re: Africa Here I come - 05/31/16 10:36 PM
Derrick I use your .300 wm and not one of my shots was over 300 yards. You should stalk in closer like me.
But you are the Super hunter. And after shooting your gun out to 900 at targets.... you could have saved you some walking

Nice job. Some great trophies there. How did the kudu score?

Nice work! Were you shooting the 300Wmag on the eland? Four shots (I'll assume they were all hits to the vitals) to go down - tough SOB - sounds like Nilgai on steroids.

Re: Africa Here I come - 06/02/16 02:05 PM
Funny on the eland. When I was going after mine, my PH kept reminding me how important it was to make the first shot count, and to get as close as possible. The stalk was very long, around a mountain, the belly crawling down it to get into position above it. I missed where I was aiming and got lucky, breaking his neck with the shot. He dropped instantly. The manager of the ranch had a dozen guys on hand to track him if the first shot didn't put him down, and to help load him up once he was down. Really an impressive operation on their part!!!

Re: Africa Here I come - 06/02/16 04:46 PM
Why such long shots?
Did you want to take long shots?
In my 6 times in Africa taking 45 animals, I never took a shot over 300 yards and that was in the Kalahari in southern Namibia.
Looks like you had a great time. My Eland took 5 shots to anchor as well those suckers are really tuff.

We got back into some more hilly country in the Karoo that way we could see more animals in more remote parts of the property. And just took what Africa gave us. The Kudu came out of a bowl that we could not get any closer to right at low light. Guide had 2 hunters miss the same Kudu last year so I took what I could get.

Re: Africa Here I come - 06/03/16 10:01 PM
Eland. You did good. I know I'm the only one on this forum, and the internet for that matter, that's ever wounded anything; that being said, I'll openly admit that I've wounded not one, but two eland. 'Cost me a lot of money. Killed two also on later, separate hunts. Of the two wounded (both, and, the first kill, with a .375), one, probably shot through the dewlap, hopefully recovered. The second, probably not; shot too high in the shoulder. 'Tracked both for days. 'No tougher animal, and I've killed three buff (none wounded, Praise the Lord.) Both eland kills took multiple shots after the first, anchoring shots.

Wow, you are quite the shot! Did you make those shots off sticks or were you able to use the bipod?
Creekrunner, my first shot on my eland also went through the dewlap, but I got another crack at him the next day, fortunately.
Great trophies! Congratulations.

Lots on bipods as we would hike up high in the AM and get a cliff advantage and spot game. The nyala was off sticks.

Re: Africa Here I come - 06/07/16 01:35 AM
Shot my first eland on his left side, he hunkered up slowly turning 180 degrees. I placed another round in the opposite side same location . Down he went in a cloud of dust....300 weatherby 180 grain Hornady.
Second eland same gun one shot ran 30 yards.... Dirt nap.
Guess I got lucky.
Then again both under 100 yards.
Great pictures gentleman....
