I shot a pig ol mule deer.

Hunted hard on 28,000 acres in Yoakum and Cochran county for 4 days. Saw one 20 minutes into the opening day hunt that I kicked myself for passing up for 3.5 days. Had to leave this am regardless of success, and was staring straight at a tag sandwich yesterday evening.

Glassed the sand hills and walked the draws for miles for 3.9 days. Rode in polarises for many miles in between. Stopped hunting over those days just for sandwiches.

At 4:30 yesterday evening we decided to check a sand hill area close to camp that nobody had checked due to so much human activity. Drove the polaris up to the edge of a blowout to glass the hills and this guy jumps up 30 yards away. My rifle was still in the rack. Slammed on the brakes and hurried a 75 yard shot. High lung and spine dropped him and he was taking his last breath when we got there.

I had fretted over having to take a 300 yard plus shot off of sticks (I'm not comfortable at all over 275), and it happened way different than planned.

Couldn't be happier with it though.

Heck of a buck!

Thanks guys. Happened so fast all I really knew was he was a huge mature bodied animal. The sand hills behind him were camouflaging his antlers so I had no idea how nice his antlers were. The normal hunts here are: you spot the animals and judge their antlers and maturity and then try to get to him.

It was a real nice surprise when we walked up on him. I would have settled for a 160" buck, he's green gross at 190 and change. I'm pretty much done killing them now. I'll go with my son and friends for the fun, and to harass them.

318# live 255# dressed. My buddy killed one same evening that was 320# live and 265# dressed. This place is a gem.

Rusty, you need to buy that place and take me hunt'n, I will say JF is the best and should already be in the hall of fame

What did he weigh?

My guide and I were desperate and really down in the dumps yesterday. We had covered so much area and strained our eyes so long glassing.

Bad part is that we knew there should have been some awesome bucks after such a wet year, and we just hadn't seen them. Other hunters in camp had been seeing some really good 170's but were passing them to get one like mine, while I would have been more than happy with a 170.

Incredible string of events, just before we jumped this deer, within 100 yards of him, we stopped to let my guide shoot a yote. He couldn't find him in his scope. Thank God!

Thanks again guys. I'm pretty stove up and have shaken baby syndrome as well. My guide is an old friend who is older than me and in better shape as well. Tortured me with walking/trotting to the next ridge countless times (and after 4 days I was believing I'd somehow pissed him off).

Burned several tanks thru his polaris that he babies, which means we walked a lotta places I thought his polaris should go.

Another tidbit. I always take a flask of makers for post hunt celebration. I had gotten so down I didn't load it up for that last hunt. My guide had been using mine the first 3 days on the way in. When we killed the deer he pulled out his own flask of crown he packed for the first time.

That buck deserves a nice single malt or some Pappy Van Winkle.

I'm learning with each passing year that it takes a little while to heal up after a hunt like that. Feel better soon.
