No more than 80 miles which also is the distance of my ranch to the house

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/23/15 12:39 PM

I make the trip from Tyler to Paducah and Childress occasionally. It's a hard trip to do for a weekend hunt though. Roughly 6 hours each way

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/23/15 01:21 PM

Unless it is for something like mule deer or huge white tail, I wouldn't drive more than 1.5 hours.

I traveled to Montana for a field trial.

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/23/15 02:30 PM

I just drove 8 hours each way to hunt for a Sika deer last month. I think the longest drive one way was 18 hours, from CA to Colorado. I've done quite a few 12 hour drives one way. But if it's farther, I've flown.

I drive about 3.5 hours routinely. That's close enough that I don't "have" to stay overnight to go check feeders & cameras.

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/23/15 05:57 PM

3.5 hours almost every week.

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/23/15 06:51 PM

Probably no more than 5 hours unless it was a great place, then just double it to 10 hours.

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/23/15 07:27 PM

Driving to hunt is no big deal, I drive the 13 hours back and fourth to AZ to hunt predators more than a half dozen times a year. Gas is cheap and highways are good. Just schedule not to hit Albuquerque at rush hour.
Adios,
Gary

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/24/15 04:31 PM

3.5 hours each way to our south texas lease which I do almost every week during season. Have driven to Idaho with a trailer and Polaris to elk hunt. Pretty much will drive anywhere if its a good hunt

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/24/15 04:36 PM

Idaho to Arizona for Coues deer is about 1000 miles. Going down to South texas for Whitetail and turkey is about 1800 miles. We are serious about our hunting trips. smile

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/24/15 05:24 PM

IMO, the length of the drive is proportional to the length of the hunt. Weekend at the place, not more than 6 hours. 6-8 days chasing elk or mule deer, may be 15-18 hours?

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/24/15 05:32 PM

I have been driving to West Texas to hunt for 8 yrs now. It is 425 miles now from my house to ranch HQ. I also have been going to Western Kansas for 4 yrs now. That is 925 miles. I also have made the trip from Ft. Stockton twice in Dec back to Kansas just to hunt for 2 days then back. That is 660 miles. Was on a lease in Jayton that was 325 miles door to gate and I hunted it every weekend for 3 yrs.

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/24/15 05:50 PM

Traveled 2 1/2 hours to my lease for 5 years untill we lost it. Now I go where ever I can hunt, including 17 hours to Colorado for elk this year.

as far as necessary.

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/25/15 10:08 PM

18 hours on the road for a hunt is better than one hour in the office. The farthest I have driven is Flagstaff, AZ.

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/26/15 02:01 AM

Depends for me.

On a lease we had, it was 4hrs one way, didn't like it unless it was a 3+ day hunt.

If it is a one time hunt like Elk in Colorado, Bison in S. Dakota, or turkey/deer in MO, then the drive is tolerable.

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/27/15 05:05 AM

I have been driving from the Phoenix area to Cross Plains, TX for the last 6 years, 943 miles door to gate.
It is worth it to me to hunt private land, very uncommon in Arizona, with friends.
I have a nice bed to sleep in and walk out the door and am hunting.

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/27/15 05:17 AM

1650 miles from door to cabin in Montana I hunted elk out of on 5 trips. Priced out of my budget these days or would be glad to hunt that place again.

All the leases I have been on in Texas have been within 3 hours one way including the one I am on now. The one exception was West of Camp Wood and that one though closer than my place in East Mississippi, I could be hunting in Mississippi before I could get to that lease.

Help run a turkey hunt in the Spring for the last 5 years and plan to do it as long as they will let me just North of Bracketville. That hunt is well worth the drive helping kids hunt turkey is a lot of fun.

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/27/15 02:13 PM

For 16 years I drove 6 hours one way, then for 5 years 4 hours, now 2 hours one way....Always hunted with a friend so the drive was as good a time as the hunt.

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/27/15 02:25 PM

Last year 800 miles each way to hunt mule deer in northwest Nebraska.
I would drive further for a giant mule deer.
For a whitetail about10 miles is my max.

100 miles from Wife's house to ranch house. I've done it for so long I could do it in my sleep.

Re: Travel to Hunt - 11/28/15 04:26 AM

Drove 2,000 miles from SE TX to Regina, Saskatchewan 11 years ago to hunt ducks and geese for about 10 days. Great trip. Drove pretty much straight home, nonstop and it took 33 hours stopping in Fayetteville, Arkansas to drop off my rider. The dog and I made the last 9 hours without much conversation.

Drove about 1,000 miles scouting while we were up there so put over 5,000 miles on my PowerStroke for that trip. Good times.
