Early warning detection!

For those of you who may not still have the eyes of an eagle or an owl, this may be of interest.

When I am night hunting I sometimes get surprised when I survey the area with my night vision gear and discover a "creature of interest." I bought a "DriveWay Patrol" sensing device that has really helped eliminate some of the surprises. I set the detecting device out fairly close to where I have set out feed or where I've seen game trails gather and cross. So, instead of constantly trying to eyeball the area of interest, the detector sets off an alarm for me. The device I bought ($20.00) has an audio alarm as a standard feature, and no way to turn it off. So I took it apart, found the leads to the speaker, and clipped one of them. Now I just get a set of flashing red lights to let me know something's coming around! Good idea

When I was in high school, we would go to a buddies house south of town and hunt pigs. We would corn the roads the night before and tie cans together (loop through the tab on top) with fishing line and set a perimeter.

The night of the hunt, we would refresh the corn piles and set all the cans back up. We would park about 100 yards away and sit in the back of the truck until we heard the cans rattle, then hit the lights.

Same concept, less technology

I had a set of the expensive Dakota Alert units, until the spring floods got them. The had a super range...almost half a mile. You could sleep in the cabin until the pigs showed up ,the stalk down and shoot them.

I didn't have funds to replace them after the flooding, so i bought one of the ones from Harbor Freight (i think 12.99 for a xmtr and receiver) I have been pretty impressed by the cheap units. I put a huge globe of silicone caulk on the speaker. On low volume it is completely inaudible. ON High volume, I can barely hear it when I am in the blind with it, and its quiet outside. I also blacked out the red led on the transmitter, and ran some silicone around it to better seal it.
The first 9 volt battery on the transmitter has now lasted right at 3 months. (I leave it on all time, mounted on one of the feeder legs. The range is nowhere near what the high dollar unit was, but I reaches the 65 yards from my stand to the furthest of two feeders.

I have bought a second unit that I plan to use as a portable unit, when were are baiting roads.

The only trick is getting them set just right where the raccoons are below the sensor, but a fair size pig will set it off.

IF you want more than one, decide if you want to have separate receivers for each motion detector, or if you want the same receiver to work with multiple units. There is a small round sticker on each box with a letter on it. Match the letters and multiple transmitters will work with one receiver (and vice versa)

I did a bit of that when I was in-country in the 'Nam in the mid-'60's! The quarry was different. . .

I did that when I was in the jungle hunting/being hunted by an Alien with Arnold, or wait, was that a movie I saw, hmm....

Seriously though. I have threatend to do the driveway alarm thing/trip wire thing all year long. Ended up setting up a hutning light that stays on all the time because my sleeping quarters are about 400yrds from the feeder so I didnt think the range would work...

The ones I bought from Northern Tool work great, have another set from Sportsman Guide, two detectors two different sounds one receiver, can have up to four transmitters.

I had bobcat raiding the chickenhouse late at night;
used a $15 one like above to 'wake me up' to snipe the maurader from my upstairs bedroom window (still in my underwear@@ !)

Installed a switch inline with one speakerwire to 'selectively' enable/disable audio for blind use.

I GOTTA TRY THIS

shadams, the owner's manual claims a 400 foot range, with clear line of sight. My experience has been that the range is much greater, which has been a pleasant surprise!

They also make a great alarm for your truck and trailer or boat at a motel.
