Things I hate - 10/13/15 12:54 AM

Sticks that look like snakes and snakes that look like sticks.
So I am climbing out of my tree stand and as soon as my foot hits the ground I get an extreme urge to pee so I start high tailing it towards the truck willwhich is about 700 yards away when I get about 50 yards from the truck I can't take it anymore and drop my bow and backpack and just when I am getting ready to pee a "stick" about three feet in front of me starts slithering away. Needless to say I didn't need to pee anymore.

Why not just pee where you were at? Pee is pee. Pee in a scrape and put a cam on it. I use to be worried about peeing near any blind but when I was a about 15 my uncle started seeing a bar fly. He took her to the lease and he corned my spot for me. He told me he was corning and turned to see her peeing right where he had corned across the road by the truck. He said you might want to hunt another spot. I did but checked that spot and no corn left at all. Could have been coons but I have kinda been experimenting this theory since then and I don't think human urine scares deer what so ever.

So you're saying you can use human urine as a cover scent and it won't spook deer?good luck with that

I whizz in buck scrapes all the time and check them the next day. They will be freshly pawed out and urinated in by at least one buck. I have heard of people making a mock scrape and whizzing in it.

Whiz is whiz. I've never seen it bother deer, other than to make them curious.

Last season my hunting buddy's ten year old son had to take a dump really bad, which he did ten yards from the stand. A half hour later we watched a doe sniffing the pile.

Did you ever stop to think you never saw it bother deer because the deer it bothered were probably headed for the next county?

SFA did the study many years ago that put the myth about human urine spooking deer to bed. Heck, in the study, they even used "new car smell" and deer hit those scrapes as much as ones treated with deer urine.

Abstract
Quote:
To determine effectiveness of traditional (buck and doe urine) and non-traditional scents in mock scrapes, infrared-triggered cameras were placed on mock scrapes treated with various scents to monitor deer visitations. In 1998, four replications of mock scrapes with rutting buck urine, mock scrapes with estrous doe urine, mock scrapes with human urine, and no treatment were monitored from 11 October - 5 December in Houston and Trinity Counties, Texas. Mock scrapes were constructed in areas typified by published descriptions of natural scrapes. All treatments received visitations by deer. For bucks, treatments receiving the most visits were scrapes with rutting buck urine and scrapes with human urine. No difference could be detected between these two treatments in either the number or age of bucks. Mock scrapes with estrous doe urine were not different from no treatment. Primary visitation of mock scrapes occurred during a 3.5-week period extending about 2.5 weeks prior to normal peak rut and 1 week after. In 1999, six replications of mock scrapes with rutting buck urine, mock scrape with estrous doe urine, mock scrape with "new car" scent, and natural scrapes were monitored beginning October 26. Preliminary data indicate deer readily visited all treatments regardless of scent used on mock or natural scrapes. Results indicate scents used in conjunction with mock scrapes are eliciting curiosity behavior and have little or no sexual attraction.

I killed a nice buck one morning about 15 minutes after climbing down from my tree stand to take a squat. He dropped about 10 yards from the pile I had left on the ground.

Again, this study proved the ineffectiveness of commercial attractants, which I agree with, there is no way to account for the bucks that DID NOT investigate the scrapes. You cannot apply absolutes to individual deer. They just don't all act the same way.

I would have to call BS on the study on human verses deer urine....if I had spent countless dollars on bottles of deer urine over the years! But sense I'm cheap and spend my money on bottle of water I will have to leave in hunting area I have no dog in this fight. bolt And I have lit up a Marlboro Southern Cut in stand.

Been doing this for years. I mentioned it in another thread and people thought I was kidding. I wasn't. Pizzes them off, so to speak.

I have a buddy that was on a lease and he and another got to playing practical jokes on each other. He started peaing on the guys fresh thrown corn anytime he could get away with it. The guy caught him on a camera he hid and showed us all the later photos. Within 2 hours the corn was gone. The deer, mostly does eat it like nothing happened.

Re: Things I hate - 10/15/15 12:06 AM

I hate it when the turkey come in and clean out the corn leaving nothing for the deer. I really hate when the #2 urge happens all at once in the stand and the only cleaning material is my sock.

Lmfao! I think pee is pee. I don't use any cover scent other than cedar branches in a tote with my clothes and that's mainly because I like the smell. If your using a cover scent thinking you are gonna fool a bucks nose well good luck with that. I just hunt my stands depending on the wind direction. But I DO NOT think human pee will bother deer from around these parts. Just my observations and believe me I can drink one beer and pee a 12pk out so I have seen it first hand lots and lots of times. And I know every time I pee, it probably scares off the 160" buck of my dreams! Oh well. hammer

I have built tons of mock scrapes over the years and have always pee'd in them, deer will start using them almost immediately

I hate those trees, stumps and rocks that look like deer. You know, the ones that fool you a thousand (or more) times but still make you grab the binos early in the morning because THIS TIME it really might be the one!! I hate that. Does get a couple beats out of the ol ticker though.

I never head into the woods without a wad in my pocket but I usually only get the urge when I have taken the climber up the tree already.

The snakes here in Texas have been one of the largest concerns of mine since moving here. Back home in Fl I had several experiences like this and it never gets any easier. I am referring to the topic and not dear hunting since I cant speak to that.

When I know there's turkey around I set my feeders to go off twice in the AM and twice in the PM. Set 'em about 45min to 1 hr apart. up

....and we keep a roll of TP in each blind. loser8
