Tips on moving a gun safe??? - 08/01/15 08:05 PM

I'm going to purchase a gun safe this week. I've never moved one. The store will load it in my truck. Then it's up to me when I get it home.

It weighs 562 pounds. I'm not going up/down any stairs. I've measured the doorways and have about 3-4 inches of clearance. I will need to take it down a hallway and make a hard right turn into my office though.

I have a sturdy appliance dolly that I think should be able to handle the weight of it. So my question is...if I have 2-3 guys helping me, can I get it with just the dolly? I've never moved one so any advice would be great. I have heard of rolling it on golf balls or pipe, but don't want to damage my hardwood floors.

Thanks!

A regular appliance dolly will move it fine with someone to help you stabilize and balance it. Because of the weight, it will cause your carpet pad to slide a little and bunch up under the carpet, so be careful of that. Clean the wheels good of any sand or gravel and your hardwood will be fine.

Watch your fingers and toes. Sheet rock and door frames are repairable.

Roll it on pieces of PVC pipe for short distance or tight spots. I put a piece of low pile carpet on a piece of one quarter inch ply wood under mine to help twist it into place and also protect my wood floor. Golf balls could damage floor.

Good luck

If you have tile or hardwood just tip it up a little and work a beach towel or a blanket under the safe, then slide it where you want it.

Dfw safe moved mine for $100 or $150 I can not remember exactly. They picked it up, delivered to the exact spot I wanted and bolted it to my foundation. These guys were pros. No dings anywhere and cleaned everything. I highly recommend.

If you have hardwood floors I would get some of those pads that are made to slide furniture. They're plastic on one side and the other has a grey foam non-slip pad. You can get them at Wal-mart and they aren't expensive. one under each corner and you should be able to slide it accross hardwood or carpet with no problem. As long as you don't get any dirt or pebbles under the pads they won't scratch the floor.

I rented a kick back dolly . Not every place rents them. The dolly when tilted back has wheels that keep it from falling back on you. You can leave it tilted back and push it with one hand. I have moved one twice with this method. Easy as can be. You will still need a hand to get it rocked onto the dolly.

A local gun store in my area will move them using several tennis balls with no issues of scratching and what not
