Horses and Deer Feeder Pens

Horses and Deer Feeder Pens - 07/20/15 12:12 PM

Can someone confirm. We have horses on our hunting lease and they will lean over and push top of fence down to get one grain of corn. We recently placed barb wire around top of pens.

We have heard that if you place flagging material on pens horse do not like it and will shy away. If so, will it affect deer as well.

If flagging does not work - well - another dumb idea.

Thanks

Build larger pens to keep all the corn well inside the pen. I would not place any flagging since all the animals will eventually get used to it over time. Single strand of electric fence will turn a horse. I would place it well outside the existing pens to allow deer room to jump or crawl under the fence(s).

Agree with STX. Large strong feeder pens are the answer. You have to be very careful if horses are in the pasture. They'll get inside the feeder pen, knock it over and then founder on corn. Killing a couple of your landowners horses is never a good thing.
