Mule Deer size... - 04/14/15 03:22 PM

Topic with txtrophy85 brought this to mind on their size and how it varies from place to place.

So here is your normal size muley, middle-aged, nothing really stands out.

Here's the one struggling to to keep up following the one above.

When eye-balling them you have to consider that the mature does are over 200 the majority of the time and the yearling bucks are right about their size.

here's another 2 deer that were right there together, top one being one of those 250-260lbers.

then his traveling buddy

I always thought the brows were a good way to judge maturity on a muley as well?

Not really, some have them, some just won't. Buddy found one last year that had 6" brows and was a young deer, his wife's was several years older and her's had none, both scored low 180s.

I believe the brows have more to do with heredity not age.

Largest I'm aware of is a dressed weight of 410, which should put it around 520ish.

Re: Mule Deer size... - 04/14/15 11:22 PM

West Texas Mule Deer that field dressed 208 lbs

Alberta Mule Deer that the guide said was 375 lbs but I do not think he was that big. He was a tough to load for 3 of us and was by far the largest body Mule Deer I have killed.

Re: Mule Deer size... - 04/14/15 11:27 PM

I would expect the Canadian deer to be pretty stout

I was looking at records the other day and the record whitetail came from Maine and weighed 511 lbs. that is a freaking steer

Wonder what the heaviest Muley is on record?

Only thing I'll shoot at 800 yards is the bird

I won't shoot at a deer much over 400 with any of my rifles

You've got a target about the size of a snuff can

Re: Mule Deer size... - 04/15/15 12:06 AM

And it's moving at 150, gaining and being shot at free handed....

Re: Mule Deer size... - 04/15/15 12:09 AM

(If you barely miss ham with a 180 AB it'll end up demolishing it's vitals, btw)
Posted By: stxranchman

Re: Mule Deer size... - 04/15/15 12:14 AM

If you hit a ham with a 130 grain Core-lokt on a Mule Deer buck running dead away it will get into the vitals(lungs/heart).

How big in body are the Sonoran mule deer
Posted By: rifleman

Re: Mule Deer size... - 04/16/15 09:13 PM

Size you shoot in WTX up to around 320 or so depending on resources. A friend had a client shoot one in MX year before last that was an absolute giant for a desert muley.
