Went a few years back. One of the most enjoyable hunts I've been on. Camped and hunted on BLM land. Plenty of antelope to go around up there.

I've hunted them a bunch of times around. Glenrock. There are a ton of speed goats in that area.

Not to horn in on the hunt you want, but a group THF speed goat hunt in WY might result in a little more blood being drawn than was had in the 1st annual THF CO DIY elk hunt. (One drop would be sufficient.) Depending on the dates, I'd put in for the draw to go with a THF group.

I haven't gotten serious about putting in for western draw hunts yet, but, at my age, I better start getting serious or "get off the pot".

I've hunted them in the southeast corner of the state on public land and was very successful. Great place to go and the game was abundant!!

I try and hunt them every year, if you hunt the right area or hold off from the first buck you have a good chance at getting a b&c buck.. Some areas have alot better of a chance at the trophies than others.

Wish I could help you since I am interested myself. So far you have either "I want to go to", or "I have ". IIRC, I was able to get allot of info off the Wyoming DOW website, but knowing what area to go, was the big hurdle for me.

Went last year with some friends, most fun I have ever had hunting. Bring you long range gun, our antelope was killed at 554 yards.

I hunt south of Cody on some private land. Between Cody and Thermopolis, there is tons of public land on both sides of the highway and there are some really nice bucks out there (I know because I have shot plenty of them). I would recommend putting in for the units on the east side of highway 120.

I hunted Wyoming a couple of years ago, near Medicine Bow, and had a great time; our group went 10 for 10 on private land. One piece of advice is to pay attention to the weather forecast. What we saw this last week in Texas is nothing compared to what can happen up there.

Been doing it for 5 years now. The first year set us up for the following years. Killed 1 the first year then limited out every year after.

Putting together my game plan in a couple weeks. I have two points, so I will put in for a trophy unit first and then a easy to get area second. I want to save my points for a trophy unit. I have the OnX maps in my handheld gps to show all the public land in Wyoming....highly recommended. If you are patient, willing to walk in a couple miles and have good spotting scope, a good buck is very doable in many units.

I would put in for the draw, that way if you don't get the area you really want then you still have a chance to buy in a different left zone afterwards.

WY pronghorn tags aren't too hard to get. The application process is pretty straight forward. Some areas require a couple of preference points but many do not. The WY Dept of Game and Fish has a pretty good website that spells it out. I'm from CO originally and since CO was always kind of stingy with pronghorn tags we hit WY quite a bit. Mostly we hunted east of Farson. They always have some leftover tags in WY every year too.

For what it is worth, you can apply for reduced price doe/fawn tags for pronghorn in many areas. These are only $48 each and in many area you can get 2 of them So, if you had a buck tag and a couple of these you could take 2 or 3 pronghorn. Additionally if you're going to WY to hunt pronghorn try to arrange the hunt at a time when sage grouse is open. They are the biggest grouse in the country and you owe it to yourself to hunt them while you're there.

Re: Antelope hunting in WY?? - 03/08/15 02:15 AM

I've been hunting there for years. I would really study the draw stats. While tags are easy to come by, tags in units with good amounts of accessible public land (mostly west of I25) have gotten harder to come by. The drought in 2011 follower by a bad winter hammered the antelope. Most of the units east of I25 are private and if you can get access, you can have a good hunt. Be ready to pay though that is if you can get on a ranch. A lot of those ranches have returning hunters. Look at the special NR license too. More money but better draw odds especially if you have a couple points when used in those better units back west.

Several years ago I hunted antelope in Wyoming ...DIY hunt with friends. We flew in from VA, rented a truck and stayed at a hotel.

We hunted around Gillette area on BLM land (Public Land)..... saw lots of antelope and a few 14" plus bucks. We shot 3 bucks all around 13-14 inches. It was our first time doing this. Key was having the maps and knowing where the public land was. We stayed in a hotel in Gillette which you'll need to book early as opening day of antelope season brings in a lot of nonresidents.

You need to put in for a tag and get drawn..... then you'll need maps to show you the BLM land that you can access. There are also ranchers that will let you hunt private land for a trespass fee. Here are a few links.

They are tons of fun to hunt. We got leftover permits in 2010 and 2011 but there haven't been any in the units we hunted the last few years and even the total number given in drawings is way down. I'm holding out for another recession or an improvement in the population. I shot mine at 235 and 185 yards so it's possible to get within a reasonable range.
