In your opinion What is a canned hunt? I am asking for your opinion on what a canned hunt is to you. (I don't want a debate on anyone else
opinion. Not even a reply on someone else opinion) I want to know what you think constitutes a canned hunt.
Ok let me ask it in a different way... Under the right conditions...The land has earth tanks, wheat fields and good cover.
If you were to hunt in a HF area with a bow, what would be the minimum acreage?
If you were hunting with a rifle, what would be your minimum amount of acreage?
If you wouldn't hunt a HF, Then it would be, I would not hunt it.
A number is all that is needed.

Nogalus is probably right ...it's going to spawn both opinions and debates. Also, there are so many variables it's hard to comment.

I don't obsess over what methods people use to hunt. It's none of my business. The market sets the rules IMO.
So, I personally think the term "canned" is not something one can or should define for others. Just hunt however you want to hunt legally.
And if you want to define how others hunt, ask yourself why?
And I say the above to ask you this, why would you want to know what I think is a "canned" hunt?

Fwiw I would hunt/kill anything anywhere on any amount of acres if it's an animal I want on my wall and on my table.

Re: what is to you - 02/14/15 09:23 PM
There are two types of hunting. High fence and free range. Whatever acerage you kill an animal has to be your own decision. Why should you care what anyone else thinks. I've seen people happy " hunting" 60 acres of high fence. There's hunting and there's killing. Only you can make that call.
Thank you for all the great comments. From all the PMS and information it appears land size is not as important as the animals and there temperament. are they wild? or do they just stand there. Keep your opinions coming because I'm getting more and more good information.

Apparently someone else has already shared an opinion similar to mine: if the animals are acclimated to humans ( I can walk right up to my neighbors oryx ), or if they are enclosed in an area that is so small as to have NO chance to evade a hunter, that is a caged hunt.

A lot of people confuse South Africa with the broad term "Africa". Plenty of wild lions in Africa. South Africa, not so much.

hell most people think Africa is a country a little bit bigger than Texas...."where you going to hunt?, oh, Africa? right on"
its a continent, bigger than the U.S. People tend to forget that

I think 80 animals in a 30ac pen maybe constitutes a can hunt, JMO of course.

In my general perception put and take = canned. Breeder pens = canned.

What if they were all lions...
For me, if the animals just stand there and stare at me, that's shooting not hunting. I have no problem what so ever with people that enjoy just shooting animals legally, just not my cup of tea.
As long as I have a challenging pursuit of the animals I'm hunting, nothing else is important for me to enjoy the hunt.

Agree with this, and would add high fence of less than 1500 - 2000 acres in size.

'Can't imagine a much sadder situation in the wildlife world.
Haven't really had the itch to hunt (a truly wild) one, even if I could justify the expense in my head. Takes a helluva a taxidermist to do one justice. Nothing deflates in death quite like a lion.

Creek,
I agree with you. I went to Tanzania a few years ago armed only with a camera. It was by far the greatest experience of my life. Taking a good shot with a camera is far more difficult than taking a good shot with a rifle.
Here is a lion on the Serengeti, hundreds of miles from any fence.
