That is a good-sized, released, pen fed hog!

That hog has been raised by the Smitherman's (see comments posts on FB page)

I don't see why it would matter if it was pen fed at any point, that thing is huge... Bet it didn't roll over and let em rub it's belly. I wouldn't have jumped on it.

Even my kids show pigs wouldn't roll rover and let em rub its belly if dogs were after them. Yeah it matters.

Looks like it has cutters to me. They are just worn off. They still curl the lips up.

Same thought here.
We used to let the breeder boars get to about 650 lbs and then sell them around five to seven years of age. Right before selling time, we would get a pair of wire pinchers and cut off about four inches of tusk leaving about an inch on the jaw.

The boars would get fed 3 1/2 pounds of ground feed a day, and they would still get this big.

An animal that was raised in captivity and escaped is by definition "feral".

Well first generation feral has to come from somewhere, but "feral" isn't always the same as "wild." I think that is where some of the confusion occurs.

x2 It mayters in every way. I have hunted with dogs many times. A mature wild boar is a handfull and can be dangerous with not enough hunters or dogs. My question is just how wild this pig is.

That's a huge pig but 790? It doesn't seem quite that huge by the photos but maybe I'm wrong.

Re: Two Texas hunters & two dogs live capture a 790-pound boar hog - 01/22/15 02:10 AM

Release or escape, that is not what I would call a feral hog. I have seen several outfits buy big boars from the sale barn an turn the out. Have clients come out that don't know better for a shoot. Amazes me how many people really can't tell. Several years ago I guided for an outfit that was based off hog hunts. They also bought hogs to sell back east. In 4 months I sorted over 12,000 feral hogs that were either trapped or dog caught. I maybe saw a handful of hogs go over 300 lbs, and they were monsters. I am no expert, but that hog in the photo is just a big Duroc boar. Men may have caught this hog, and really not known , but it's not the same as what I would call a feral hog.

Re: Two Texas hunters & two dogs live capture a 790-pound boar hog - 01/22/15 03:43 PM

Then you're not familiar with what the term "feral" means. One of the definitions is, "having reverted to the wild state, as from domestication".

A captive animal that is living in the wild is, by definition, "feral".

If your dog of 10 years is left in the woods by accident and starts hunting on its own for food, it's a feral dog.

Re: Two Texas hunters & two dogs live capture a 790-pound boar hog - 01/23/15 04:16 AM

Cameron00 the exact definition is irrelevant. The point is a boar that has lived in the wild for most of its life is dangerous for both the dogs and hunters when they are mature mean and have good sized cutters. I have seen dogs gashed open, dogs throw in the air and another time go through cattle panel (hunters creek ranch). We caught a 315 cut hog and it tok about 800 lb of men to hold it down. So no I do not believe this is a wild boar with bad intentions.

It was a domestic escapee from a local ranch.

Those would be 'whetters' (upper jaw). 'Cutters' in the (lower jaw). Don't see any cutters on that pig but some remnants might be present.

It's a large pig...regardless its origin.

Turns out it belongs to Cuco Pacheco, local farmer. The boar was identified by ear marks, judge travelled to Clyde to verify it...follow the link at the bottom of the article. Entertainment at it's peak......

I agree with you that it still takes some doin' for sure, but it does matter.
A true wild boar would be a hell of a lot more salty and likely have some nasty cutters.
