Hunting in Alabama?

Hunting in Alabama? - 01/01/15 01:48 AM

I am moving to Huntsville, AL for a new job there next month. I've only had the pleasure to hunt Texas. Is there public hunting or would I be better off trying to join a lease? Any information you want to share would be appreciated!

I could help you a little in Mississippi. But very little in Alabama, especially that far north... The black belt is historically the best part of the state but it's further south.... Good luck finding info

Used to be no deer up near Huntsville many years ago. The population up north has steadily increased over the years, though, and some very nice deer are taken up around Huntsville now.
As joedav31 says, the black belt is very good. Anywhere around Greensboro, Eutaw, etc. is prime country. Hale and Greene county have lots of river bottom land and the hunting is great.
While there are some opportunities to hunt public land, the competition is heavy. Most places consist of hunting "clubs" that lease private land or timber company land. Long-term is common there, and many of the better clubs are expensive and you practically have to be born into them to get in.
Lots of good hunting and good folks, word of mouth is your best bet. Let your coworkers know you are a responsible hunter looking for a slot and it should work out.

One of my new co workers is into hunting and fishing. I plan to pump him for info. I'm hoping when I bring my boat from Texas and take him out on the Tennessee River, he will help me out with some hunting information.

I hunt east of Huntsville and love it. Many many deer. Try the New Market area.
