6 acre honeyhole - 12/28/14 02:41 PM

I posted a while back of a plot of land that I got access to hunt..realizing this place might hold potential..I got confirmation of this when I pulled my sd card..lots of does and 2 good bodied 8's..and this is with me disturbing area each week ..I was pleasantly surprised to see an aerial picture of this tract..WOW! It is surrounded by a low fence 800 tract of thick oaks and cedars..very excited about this..question:thinking of putting a water system in..as the creek that runs through property is dry..also thinking of feeding protein and definitely putting a large feeder so I won't be disturbing..the deer are there..what's yalls opinion on putting a protein free feeder on this small tract..what say y'all..thanks..welcome any questions and opinions

Just my opinion, but I would just use some mixed with the corn. I think it would be hard to garner the true results of a protein program in that situation, but IDK. I'd sure opt for a fall food plot if you can though.

EDIT: I'd also add the water as you mentioned, anything that will make your 6 acres "stick out" among 806.

Best thing you could do is as "Western" stated. a Corn feeder. then I would add water and a salt block. Those 3 items together will draw in more deer than anything else you could do on six acres.

If it were mine I'd keep as low a profile as I could. Not so much for the deer, but because of the folks that own the surrounding land.
If you shoot something on the property you'd want to anchor it so as it doesn't jump a fenceline.
If you know the people who own the surrounding land and they approve of you crossing a fence to trail a deer, then you are good to go.
It wouldn't be hard to fence off six acres with a high fence, so keep that in mind.
I've seen it done, so just sayin!

A corn feeder and water. I wouldn't put much into a food plot or protein since the deer will not be staying on that size of property and it would just be a waste on money IMO. Maybe a cattle mineral block - the red trace mineral ones. The regular salt doesn't do anything for them and the trace will at least give them them something beneficial for just a little more money. If you did want to do a food plot, I would make one with just oats and ryegrass. Not an expensive food plot.

cheers mow. lots of good advice. tis always nice ta get ta know the neighbors, in case wounded animal would cross property. wounded animal gonna head for water.. also put out the red mineral block, even yotes chew on them. cheap corn thrower, got an analog feeder kit old one went kaput, & 5gal bucket, holds bout 50# of corn. lets deer know food. used mega plot for food plot. this year just used rake, have norrowed garden tiller it does 1/2acre. i also put out other stuff for the deer. it gives something back ta the deer, helps out for next year.. best wishes flag

Water, sweet feed, bale of alfalfa, feeder, small oat patch, mineral block and you'll have a real hot-spot. Go big or go home, even on 6 acres. Good luck and keep most everything you do under your hat. Neighbors can give you mucho grief.

As has been stated you just want to make your place as attractive as possible. They are not going to stay there but if you give them a good reason they will travel through it on a regular basis and that's really all your trying to accomplish anyway to give yourself the opportunity to take a deer.

I would say that it just as important to make your presence there as "low profile" as possible. Sneak in, sneak out, and don't make any unnecessary noise, walking around, etc. even during the off hunting hours. The deer need to feel safe, or all of the attractants in the world won't make a difference.
