One of Texas’ most well known wildlife artists was seriously injured on November 26.

Herb Booth, 72, of Rockport, known to hunters and fishermen who regularly attend Ducks Unlimited and Coastal Conservation Association fundraisers, was on his way to Iowa to go pheasant hunting and was travelling with 10 dogs for the hunt, according to his son, Peter MacMillan Booth’s Facebook page.

Booth turned off of Interstate 35 near Bruceville-Eddy to let the dogs out for a run. He crossed the uncontrolled railroad grade and was struck on the passenger side of his Dodge pickup by a train.

Booth underwent neck surgery at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple on November 28. Peter Booth said after the surgery, his father suffered a heart attack and has been unresponsive.

One of the hunting dogs was killed in the accident and another was injured.

Booth became famous in the Texas art world in the 1970s when he exhibited his Texas coastal hunting and fishing watercolors. He frequently donates his original art, valued in the thousands of dollars, to organizations like DU and CCA.

Darn. He's a Texas icon. Don't own any of his prints, but I'd love to have a hunting original of his work.
