Deer Hunt Only?

Deer Hunt Only? - 07/15/11 11:46 PM

I've seen a couple threads got me thinking. Who only deer, or duck, or whatever hunts and why? In the course of a year I will deer hunt, duck and goose hunt, run a trapline, set hog traps, call varmints day and night, spring turkey, or crows or anything. Rifle, compound, recurve, shotgun, doesnt matter and thats not counting fish for anything that swims. Most of what we ate growing up was killed or caught so I guess thats why I still do it.

I predator hunt because it's the only thing that gets me excited any more.

I kill hogs because.
1) It needs to be done
2) The places that I have access for coyotes also let me shoot all the hogs I want
3) They're Tasty

I don't hunt deer any more because it doesn't excite me and I ain't paying the exhorbatant lease fees that are so common.

I don't do any bird hunting because I suck with a shotgun.

I deer and hog hunt but usually only in deer season. I may also shoot coyotes or other vermin while deer hunting.

In the spring/summer I fish, usually offshore.

As a kid/teen I dove and quail hunted. The quail are all but gone now from my area. Never really acquired a taste for dove. I dislike duck and goose even more. Turkey are fun to hunt but I'm not going to pay the money most want to do it. Again, I'll shoot 'em during deer season.

I try to make a trip out west every fall to hunt Elk or Mule Deer but it's getting harder all the time to draw a tag as a non resident. I have found myself much more intrested in exotics than I used to be and have hunted Axis several times in the last few years and enjoyed that. I grew up near San Angelo and hunted WT's every fall for years and years but I can really take it or leave it. The price to hunt WT's has killed my enthusiasm for even a non trophy hunt. I fish frequently between hunting seasons in Trinity/Galveston Bay. I'm going to try some of the local dove hunting this year for the first time in forever. Good Topic, Later Baker

I hunt whitetail and mule deer in Texas mainly but have been to Alberta hunting mule deer 2 times and would like to do more out of state hunts. I used to hunt quail and dove but have not done much of it in the last 20 yrs now. I do hunt some exotics every once in a while. Will shoot coyotes and bobcats on site if it is in the off season and if no deer are around in deer season. Do not care for ducks, geese or turkey hunting at all. I have hunted with a rifle, a shotgun, a bow and will buy a crossbow soon to try it.

I realy enjoy hunting varmints more than i do deer hunting. I might get on another lease someday but for now I enjoy doing different kinds of guided hunts.

I hunt dove, whitetail, and turkey mainly. Turkey hunting is my favorite. Thinking about hunting exotics this year. Hunting on my lease will probably be weak due to the drought this year.

I hunt varmints, ducks, quail, dove, turkey, pigs, WT, mule deer, elk, and exotics. I hunt with compounds, recurves, pistols, rifles, and shotguns. As long as I'm out hunting then I'm happy.

Re: Deer Hunt Only? - 07/16/11 05:39 AM

Turkey is my favorite. I love to hunt Easterns here on my property in LA. and in Tenn. I also love to chase Rios in Texas. I deer hunt here on my property. Lots of deer over here in Union Parish. I duck hunt here in NE LA. and in SE Ark., two of the best duck hunting areas in the country. I will shoot a bobcat or coyote if I see one while deer hunting, but I don't go out and hunt them. I dove hunt only the first weekend or two of the season. After that, I'm focused on bow season. I have no hogs on my property, and don't want them. I've never been hog hunting, but I'm sure it would be fun.

i am mostly a deer and hog hunter, am hopping to get a tag and do a bear hunt in minnisota this year. used to just hunt deer in season then the hogs showed up in east texas.with the hogs i usally hunt on and off till the wheather gets hot around june.in summer i do a little panfishing and a little bass fishing. also did my first exotic hunt last spring killed a blackbuck may do a little more of this if can afford it would like a red deer , am also thinking of trying some preditor calling next year, have been dove, duck and gease hunting its ok but just can,t seem to work it in anymore and have became more a rifleman than a shotgunner, also do a bit of bowhunting, and just ordered a crossbow hope to get deer and hog with it this fall

Re: Deer Hunt Only? - 07/16/11 05:10 PM

My hunting passion is whitetails with a compound bow. My dream hunt is a bugling bull elk with my bow, maybe someday. A couple of spring turkey hunts and I am good.
Hunting in Kansas has really been a blessing because of the people I have met, the quality of the deer and they actually have seasons where the fall is cool and enjoyable to bow hunt.
I am really tired of hot Texas deer seasons. As an archer I just hate sweating and fighting Mosquitos. Scent control is a nightmare in Texas.
I too am a lousy shot with a shotgun but will still enjoy the occasional dove, duck, pheasant or goose hunt.

As a kid we would squirel, rabbit and dove hunt. As I have grown older and hava a son we dove, deer, pheasant, quail and hog hunt. I really just enjoy spending time with him mostly. Hey we even have blast at the range shooting skeet.

I have said on this board before, it may be expense be it is worth every penny to hang out with my son and our friends that share our values and beliefs.

Next year we are planning on adding Bow Fishing in the summer. I am excited!!!

Re: Deer Hunt Only? - 07/19/11 02:14 PM

i hunt dove, deer and turkey. I love to dove hunt because you get to shoot the most, to be honest, i like blasting a few boxed of shells..fun!!!

i love the stalk and call of the spring turkey hunt. nothing gets my heart pounding like having that gobbler talk to ya..

I love to deer hunt for the solitude. turning my phone off, sitting bymyself, not being bothered, whether i shoot a deer or not is secondary, as long as i see some wildlife and perhaps have a shot, im good

Re: Deer Hunt Only? - 07/19/11 07:13 PM

I don't put any effort into anything but deer hunting. I'll shoot hogs if I see them, and occasionally set up a varmint call for foxes and coyotes, but nothing major. I really don't bother any with bird hunting, although I do take friends and let them dove hunt at the ranch in exchange for help filling feeders and such

Re: Deer Hunt Only? - 07/19/11 07:35 PM

I focus soley on deer although I will kill hogs anytime they present an opportunity. If I had a couple million dollars in the bank I'd hunt all the time and not be sitting here checking out the THF while simultaneously listening to another boring webinar at work crazy

I hunt hogs and coyotes year round. No bird hunts at all. Don't fish much at all. Keep the freezer full of deer meat. Nothing more fun than hog hunting though. Going to Alaska for my first black bear hunt in September partyon555. I've never been to Alaska before so the scenery alone will be worth the trip.
