First Euro Whitetail

First Euro Whitetail - 01/10/13 05:34 PM

This is my KS buck from this year.

Was going to have someone do the Euro for me, but decided to take the challenge myself. I think it turned out pretty good for my first attempt. I definitely learned a lot.
I tried to take special care of the bases, but had a brain fart when using the pressure washer on the skull and hit the bases. They are a little off color, but not bad.

What is the best way to darken them back up, keeping as natural a look as possible?

The funniest thing was running around looking for this "40% Peroxide". The last beauty supply place I walked into, the older lady asked, "Now, is this going to be for a human head or a deer head?". I was happy to find her!

Sorry for the bad cell phone pics, one day I'll break out the good camera for this stuff...

Use some linseed oil. You can put on numerous coats for darker color or fewer coats for a lighter color.

Thanks for the comments and input gentlemen.

I did a lot of research on getting the bases back to color and tried a few different things on some old antlers.

The best thing I found, for the color of this particular set of antlers, was Minwax Wood Finish - Dark Walnut #2716.

Applied with a Q-tip and quickly wiped away. Will try to post pics later.

Thanks again!
