The Gristmill In Gruene has a really good one, I have had the one at Goodsons in Tomball that is often said to be the best. Although it is good, it’s not my favorite. Locally, Neri’s has one that is good. It won’t be long until the Mary’s followers chime in voting for theirs.

Hilltop cafe in Fredericksburg has a good one, but it is pricey.

Moonshine Grill in Austin also has a tasty one.

We're done with the Hilltop. Ate there for many years. Their service was always surly. Now they expect their reputation to make up for it, but their food quality sucks. 'Sorry Johnny.

But they call it Jager Schnitzel.

And serve with brown gravy with mushrooms.

Some may disqualify it for these things but the steak itself is outstanding.

We ate at hilltop this past summer. I wasn't impressed at all.

I had this bad boy in Ringgold last week. Didn't even know there was a restaurant there. It was good and crispy!

Murns in archer city. The diablo, topped with jalapeño and queso. They also serve traditional with cream gravy, but that queso is a nice twist.

No kidding. Used to be more there before the 2006 fire that burned half the town. It's the gateway to OK... hear there is a casino just over the bridge.

I've always believed that the Koppe Bridge Bar & Grill in College Station was underappreciated.

Paraiso on the west side of 83 in Zapata. Their large is 'bout the size of the one in the pic up above and prices used to be more than reasonable.

Had a pretty good one a couple of years ago at the Olney Cafe. FWIW

Heitmillers in Bellmead, just north of Waco on I-35, has a very good chicken fried steak. The big one is quite a big one, so I get the half, which is plenty. Also worthy of mention is their fried stuffed jalapeños, which are great and great big. One is all you need.

Our local DQ is better than Mary's. I would not pull off of IH20 to go to Mary's, there CFS has went downhill, way downhill.

I pulled off !20 for CFS at Mary's one time, sure it was large and will fill you up if you can stand to eat it, but there are many places with better CFS.

My wife made CFS from Axis yesterday. Delicious and so tender. Easy to cut with a dull fork.

My go to now is Franco's in San Angelo. We stopped at Mary's on our way home from Dallas not long ago. Had never eaten there. We were not impressed. One of the worst CFS I've eaten.

They used to be good years ago, the last two times we stopped there, has been several years, the food was so-so to bad. They used to have the best mountain oyster I have eaten.

Don`t be a Hater. I have been going to Mary`s for almost 30 years. I do not eat their chicken fry steak very often because I am picky about chicken fry steak and I have had a few over the years that were just OK. Me and my wife went a few days ago and I went with the CFS and it was one of the best I had eaten in a long time. I just wish it was like that every time.

schnitzel is a breaded fried pork steak............the jaeger part is the gravy with mushrooms - I love it, but it ain't CFS

Ponder steak house is pretty darn good.

I will cede to your technicality but still choose it over what 90% of restaurants serve.

It should be made with veil not pork if it's authentic.

Twin peaks has a pretty good one and they put the mashed potatoes underneath the steak which I thought was very good.

I’m not sure if it was mentioned, but ranchmans steakhouse in Ponder has a pretty mean CFS. Gravy on top with some hand cut fries will not disappoint

Had a really good one at Teddy Jack’s here in Lubbock a few weeks ago. Two could easily split it and it was very well seasoned with a great ratio of breading to thick, tender steak. Can’t wait to go again.

Had a real good chicken fried elk steak at Steiner Ranch Ranch steak house in Austin a while back.

Maybe I'll get flamed for mentioning a chain. The cotton patch chicken fried steak is pretty darn good. And you dont have to drive half way across Texas to get it. I like the chicken fried bacon there too, i had both two weekends ago and the weekend before that as well. Chicken fried bacon is one if my new favorites.

Last weekend I got chicken fried steak at Joe Willy's in Rockwall which i believe is also a chain but smaller/lesser known. It was pretty good too.

Wow, I was thinking about them, but didn’t think anyone would have any idea where they were. We eat there once every couple of months and always bring home 6 or 8 slices of pie.

I was watching that show on PBS where the guy travels around Texas and they showed some place in Seguin that had one covered in queso. It looked really good on TV. I think the menu item was called the lineman, but I missed the beginning when they named the restaurant

Some of the guys on our lease ran across Buck's in Sweetwater and their CFS have been great so far. They have a 12, 8 and 4 oz option. The 12 is as big as the plate and it is a platter plate not a regular one. I posted about them several weeks ago on here.

Depends what you mean by best? There is Best for the money, and then there is the best ever. The stockyards in Fort Worth has at least two. The Horseshoe Hill Cafe and H3 on Exchange. If you want a fork tender CFS and real country gravy you can't go wrong at either. And those are the facts!

Had one at Sweetie Pies in Decatur over the thanksgiving week end, says it is a thin tenderized rib eye. It was thin and cremated, ever thing else was good, might have been bad day for the cook and might try again.

Mary's was just on a recent episode of The Texas Bucket List, she actually country fries her "chicken fried steaks", also Mary's opened in the 80's.

Is smoking still allowed at Mary's? The last time I was there it was pretty disgusting.

I ate there 6-8 months ago and didn't notice any smoke. If there had been then I'm pretty sure I would have smelled it.

Beehive in Albany! They are only a restaurant bc of their pan fried chicken fried steak! Banker they tried to get loan from told them if they didn’t know chicken fried steak they wouldn’t make it so they learned from a grandma from that area and went back to banker and cooked him chicken fried and got their restaurant. Chicken fry is awesome but one of best steaks you will find anywhere as well!

I ate out once a week with my neighbor. He moved. I'm not about to go out to a restaurant and eat by myself.

You need to find another dinner buddy. We all you know you "know longer fry at home", but my question is why? If it's just you, get a cheap little electric fryer and use it on your back porch. It will not smell up the house and is easy clean up. You still have a lot of life to live Bill....go live it!

Dang, that sucks. I lived in San Angelo in the late eighties and ate there frequently. It was good back then.

Tried the CFS at Peabody's Cafe in Goldthwaite this year. I made the mistake of getting the large....wholly molly. It was half of a cow! Very good taste and had enough left over for dinner the next night! Mashed potatoes and red beans were great too.

Betty Zentner is past 70, she said it was time to retire.

Funny I just saw this thread bc we stopped in Strawn at Mary's last night and had their cfs. Its pretty darn good. I like the thin batter, good change of pace. I am a big fan of the chicken fry ribeye at sweety pies in Decatur. Never left disappointed.

It's the destination that counts sometimes! Leave the city and 3 hours later anything tastes good!!

I agree Mary's has the Best I have ever eaten! I have traveled all over the State and tried a lot of CFS there is some good ones and a whole lot of Very Bad CFS out there !! Always come Back to Mary's for my all time favorite!! I live about 40 miles east of Dallas but the trip to Mary's is never to far!!! All 0f the food there is awesome !

I have another vote for Mary`s Café. Our family ate there on 2-28 and it was probably the best chicken fried steak I have eaten in . I could have literally eaten it with a spoon. We have been eating @ Mary`s for over 30 years and it was the best I have ever had from ANY restaurant. My only regret was I only got a small. I could have eaten a medium because it was so good. I am glad I only live 22 miles away, and there is only 1 stop sign between me and Mary`s Cafe.

My son and I ate at Sissy's in Breckenridge Friday. We both got CFS and it was pretty dang good. Definitely eat there again. Really nice people working there as well.

The Realto in Alpine was pretty darn good this past Thursday. First one I had eaten in 2020 and well worth it. What was better? The appetizer calf fries.

We took our neighbors there a while back, it was dayum good. Wife is going to Blue Ridge tomorrow, begged her to pick me up one on the way home.

That being said, there is another Mary's called Mary's Brazos Cafe. This place is north of Granbury. It is consistently excellent CFS. You got to want to find it but its worth it.

Jerry's is my stop when getting off the lake. That is one very very large CFS.

That’s my thoughts as well. I wondered if Mary’s On The Brazos was still open, I used to stop in there to eat when working that area during the Barnett Shale boom.

My grandson & I like Ranchers Steakhouse & Grill in Gatesville. Always try to stop there and has always been great!

I wouldnt mind having a Mary's CFS right now. The best I've had south of San Antonio is at Smoliks in Mathis.

Went to Main Street Cafe in Lewisville today and it was good for the price, best part was the Pinto Beans man they were way good.
If you are in the area it is a good place to stop, do not go out of your way for it.

If you go to Mary's, get the pinto beans and corn bread. It beat the cf and the corn bread is jalapeno

I had a really good CFS at the Kosse Cafe in Kosse, TX the other day. I have finally come to the conclusion that there really isn’t a 24/7/365 best CFS anywhere. Some days you get a great one, some days you get a lesser one.

I haven't eaten there in a few years but the hands down best CFS was at a place called Lone Star Tavern on Hwy 84 in Bellmead. A small order would cover your plate, a large could cover a platter. That doesn't include the huge loaded potato and salad that came with it.

I'll need to check this out Friday - I have hunted Putnam, Cisco, Eastland, and Ranger areas for over 25 years and for some reason never heard of Mae's.

There is a road that ain't much of a road between Tractor Supply and Dollar General. If you're not looking for it you won't ever see it. Mae's is on that road behind the Dollar General.

When you find it, you'll realize why you've never seen it.

The Elm Fork Tap House in Lake Dallas off of Turbeville rd is not it. We tried it today the CFS was okay, mashed potatoes tasted almost like instant potato's, the cream gravy was sweet, Cowboy beans were just okay not what I anticipated. You have to ask for Salt & Pepper, my buddy had to ask for Ketchup for his fries and they brought him one of those little paper containers like you refill in an fried catfish place.

Looks pretty good in the pic, not so and it is pricey Chicken fried steak with 2 sides $14.00. Will not eat there again

I've heard the same thing about Elm Fork. Haven't tried it for that reason. You just gave me another reason not to.

If they can't be bothered to make gravy then they don't even deserve consideration. Seems everyone brags about this or that chicken fried steak then when you get it, it has some gelatinous white flavorless canned goop on it. Totally ruins what otherwise might be an honest attempt.

Knife and Cork in Gatesville has a chicken fried ribeye that's the bomb. Their menu changes daily, so if you're going there for the CFR, you'll need to call ahead and see what day they'll have it.

I'm not going to compare it to Mary's, or Massey's, or even my MIL's CFS, but try it out at the Firehouse Cafe down in Granbury. It's cooked after you order it, the coating is always crispy and the gravy thick. All the sides are good if you have room after the steak. I generally skip the veggies if it is peach cobbler or banana pudding day, even had both once. Make the trip, give it a try, let us know what you think.

Ate Mary’s again this week to see if it changed my opinion. It did not and believe it is the most overrated cfs out

I hear the best chicken fried steak is at Lulu's in San Antonio, chicken fried steak with queso gravy instead of white gravy. Gonna have to try it someday.

I had a CFS in El Paso with pepper jack cheese and green chile sauce on it. Wasn't quite queso, but it wasn't bad.

Interesting? I would have to know someone I trust highly recommend it or try a bite first before I gambled my whole meal on it.

My Sis and her husband went there a few years ago, said that CFS was out of this world. She never sends food pics, but she sent me pics that day LOL.

We ate some sort of fried meat with gravy and white bread at least 5 nights a week when I was growing up. I still prefer it the way Mimi fixed it. If I’m buying a meal from a restaurant I usually don’t order fried beef.

My Dad and I had breakfast there about 40 years ago. It was one of the best breakfasts I have ever had. Everything from scratch.

Ate a B-Day lunch loast month with both son's at Babe's in Carrollton - both were born in July ...3 years apart & in seperate states.... back in my road warrior days of being a weekend father. Babe's was noisy but had Good service & IMO better than average CFS. Jeez I almost did not recognize "downtown "Carrollton". We had lived there for 30 years before the move up to Texoma & 6 years ago down here in Dogwood City.....just mebbe it's almost time too move one last time ... but I doubt if I could pull that off....Oh well.

Haven't been to the Blessing Hotel since 1992, but it was fine food back then. True Southern cooking, and sit down family style eating. Sure met some good people back then. We used to go there for lunch every Friday, from the nuke plant.

Pre grated cheese. That is fine with be but some complained.

It is Not Normas cafe on Park Lane. Had lunch there today and the CFS was just okay not very large the excess batter makes it look bigger.
Mashed potato's and Turnip Greens were just okay good, the Pinto Beans sucked they tasted like more like ranch style beans than Pinto Beans.

I went to the Normas on the N Dallas tollway quite a while back and had their meatloaf and it was no Bueno, have eaten breakfast at the Oak Cliff location twice and it was good.

So for now no more Normas!

WOW. Only 2 post and you are already so wrong. Neither is Mary`s in Strawn. I started making my own because neither of those places consistently had a tender CF Steak. Jakes has too much gristle and Mary`s is often undercooked. The best thing about both of their CF Steaks are the French fries. I`ll give them that.

I had a very good CFS at The Highlander in Wichita Falls last week. I would rate it in the outstanding category, something Norma's ain't.

that's a shame. on a side note, Fred's cafe has moved to the west side and taken over the buffalo west building. They should be open next month. Their CFS is legit.

Because it’s close to the hunting spot I’ve had 4 Mary’s CFS in the last two months, my Opinion has gone from over rated to sucks. Service sucks also and it’s $20

As others have said - Dinner Bell in Graham us as good as it gets, the chicken fried chicken too. I had a nice CFS and Eggs from J’s Breakfast and Burgers this morning in Addison. Not a show stopper but after a 6am flight back into Dallas it hit the spot. They still allow smoking inside but it seems like their regular clients appreciate it.

Had a craving for Chicken Fried Steak and eggs for breakfast, so Sunday the wife and I went to Norma's Cafe on N Dallas tollway. the CFS was $11.99 added an extra egg for $1.00 so $12.99.
Good size portion of meat, it was to salty, thin and kind of chewy, wife had a Ham & Cheese Omellete there was very little cheese or ham in it. No more Normas for us






Since that did not really satisfy my craving, yesterday I went solo to the Coffee House Cafe, much better a bit more expensive $17.99 with two eggs.
Had an awkward moment, asked the waitress for Tabasco, the gals brings me a big bottle, take the cap of and oh Chit there is not one of those plastic deals at the end of the bottle to regulate the flow got a napkin and dabbed some of it off.

The CFS was pretty darn good, thick tender portion of meat, guessing pounded out Ribeye? No more $17.99, + $4.50 for OJ & tax + tip No Mas; for that kind of $$ I am going to make my own

CFS and eggs is underrated.

Sunview Cafe in Anna (they have other locations as well) has a very good CFS both on the breakfast and lunch menus.

No pics….but the CFS and eggs at R&K in Weatherford is pretty dang good. And a mean ham and eggs too.

The best one I ever had was in the Buckhorn Saloon and steakhouse in D'Hanis. I just looked it up and was sad to find out it is permanently closed.

El Paraiso's chicken fried steaks in Zapata, TX have been featured on multiple Texas eats shows. All of the food at El Paraiso is very good but especially their chicken fried steak.

It’s been 20 years since I’ve been there, but recall it was large and good. And the Corona beer is ice cold.

I second the motion on the Paraiso in Zapata. The J&P way down in Comstock, on Hwy 90, serves a dang good chicken fried steak too.

We ate there a couple weeks ago. I don’t know that I’d call the CFS great, but it was pretty good. Go north a bit to Bellmead and Heitmillers and try theirs. They are big and good. And while there order the stuffed Jalapeño (one per person, cause they are big).

The best chicken fried steak in Arlington is at the Southern Recipes grill.

Cabernet Grill Texas does a CF ribeye With a lobster sauce gravy. Expensive but succulent. Fredericksburg.

Local to me a small joint in Hillister, Texas called the Hitchin Post makes a quality CFS.

These are on opposite ends of the cost spectrum.

The wife and I went to Dunstons Steak House on Lovers Lane tonight.
My wifes boss gave her a gift card for there and we decided to use it and are very grateful for the gift

My CFS was thin with little flavor and the meat was soft but not tender soft like a pounded out ribeye, more like a frozen patty they buy in bulk, the gravy was also thin with so so flavor.
On to the good parts, the rolls were very good especially with the Apple Butter, squash casserole was good and my Butter Beans with ham were pretty tasty.
Again thankful for the gift card but would not spend my hard earned dollars there.

Hadn’t had a good one in awhile but never tried to make one at home. Turns out it wasn’t to hard and I’m mad at myself for waiting all these years

The smoked chicken fried steak at Local Yocal in McKinney is pretty dang tasty.

Not a big fan of saltgrass, but they have a pretty good CFS and the range rattlers are to die for.

In Dallas, Bubba's or Ozona is pretty hard to beat.

It is not Saltgrass.Steakhouse. Wife and I ate there 2/13/2024 and I had the CFS, it was big and good, but not nearly the best by far.

The BEST I have had is making my own starting with Pork Tenderloin!! GAWD its good

Yeh buddy! Take a pork loin off a big boar hog that nobody wants to mess with, steak & butterfly, give it a little love with a mallet (but keep it kinda thick), brine it for 2-3 hrs/rinse/dry/season with Fremin's Magic Dust/bread & fry with some peppered cream gravy on top and SON!!

Not exactly a chicken fried steak but sho is good, and NOBODY will know it's from an old wild boar hog if you don't tell them.

New York Hill off I-20 in Thurber/Mingus, TX makes a mighty mean one.
