Best Hill Country BBQ west of I-35 ? - 10/28/17 03:22 PM

Looking for good Hill Country BBQ.

Can someone recommend some lesser known places in the area from Lampasas down to Johnson City over to Fredericksburg up to Llano (not Cooper's) and back to Burnet.

Where is the best BBQ along that route?

Thanks in advance.

Don't know about "best," but Firehouse BBQ in Lampasas is good.

Eve's Cafe on the Square, which serves German food, is really a hidden gem in Lampasas.

Used to be the "Salt Lick" in Driftwood in the 80's......all the libturd yuppies from Austin found in in the 90's.....all the low key, off the beaten path places I used to love have been ruined or the owners died and their places are now but a fond memory.....

Jes sayin'..... 2cents

If you want really good "local" Texas BBQ drive up to Argyle to 407 BBQ and see what Brian has going on.....

The "Boss" turkey sandwich and the "Boss Hog" pulled pork sandwich will make you drive back 150 miles just to take one home.....

Not sure about west, but east there are some great places. Blacks, Kruez, Smitty's and my number one is Murllers in Taylor, Tx

Thanks for all the responses.

Jeffbird, we may check out your suggestions in Lampasas.

IF, we venture over towards Austin we might try Salt Lick and IF we head home on 79 we might just try one of those Taylor BBQ spots.

I love having options and there are many of them in the CenTex/Hill country.

P.S. We have 407 BBQ on the list for the next DFW trip.

Coopers in Llano used to be hard to beat

Inman's country kitchen in Llano slightly west of Coopers on the north side of 29 ... been going there for close to 50 years, brisket is pretty solid and their turkey sausage is great, homemade breads too.

Paynes BBQ in Burnet (west side of town, on north side of hwy 29)

Firehouse in Lampasas has been hit or miss for me over the years, okay to pretty good depending on the day.

Marble Falls has a couple that have been pretty good, Holy Smokes on Commerce street, Ken's Catfish BBQ on Main and Peete Mesquite BBQ on north 281

edit ... a couple more came to mind but might be out of your way.

Bertram has hwy 29 BBQ that has great brisket the few times I've been in there.

Kingsland has Spyke's BBQ that has been pretty solid the several times I've been there ...

Georgetown has a couple worth mentioning too ... Full House BBQ is a food trailer, some of the best beef ribs I have ever had, very good brisket too ... and I hear great reviews out of Black Box BBQ (another food trailer) with pit master John Mueller (grandson of famous Louie Mueller from Taylor, likely the best brisket I've bought out of stone/mortar)

Ol 300 in Blanco square is the best in the area by my opinion.

Heavys in Hondo is the best BBQ in the entire Country. I realize it may be a little out of your way, but once you have eaten it you will probably want to move to Hondo. At least that way you won't have to drive so far to get the best BBQ that anyone cooks.

Cranky Frank's in Fredericksburg is good.

You'll be close to Austin. No shortage of awesome BBQ around that town. Franklin's, Micklewaith, Valentina's, Stiles Switch.

Take your pick they're all good.

We travel up and down 281 often. Used to look forward to Firehouse bbq. Plenty of parking. Doggy area. Food portions got so small we don't stop there anymore. $30 for two people, 3 skinny strips of brisket, small dollop of potato salad, small portion of beans and tea. $30 friggin dollars. I'm out.

From what I have seen $30 is closer to the cost to fee 1 than 2 at a GOOD bbq place these days, and its the number one reason I don't eat bbq other than at home.

Yep if you want the top echelon of BBQ you have to pay to play. The better bbq joints are using choice cuts of meats, they are going with high end cuts. So the price naturally is going to be higher, however if you think all bbq is the same then I can't help you to understand why it's expensive.

In Llano you have Laird's, he is the guy who managed Cooper's years ago. He is located on the south end of town on hwy. 16.
