I'm going to Georgetown to a week long school.. Are there any good places or must eats?

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/18/15 09:45 PM

Andice General Store has a really good burger (best around IMO)
Gumbos on the square is really good, but pricey

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/18/15 10:49 PM

x2 on Andice but it's a bit of a drive. Dos salsas is a very popular mexican joint close to downtown
Posted By: PMK

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/18/15 11:11 PM

where to start ...

Hardtails sports bar (IH35 SB access road, south of north interloop) has really good hamburgers (all sorts of varieties) and my wife has had various things like meatloaf, CFS, etc. that were all very good.

Andice General Store (Andice TX, 10 or so miles west of FM2338 (also called Andice Road or Williams Drive)), great hamburgers, packed on weekends with bikers and old car cruisers.

Dos Salsas (corner of Main & University Ave (hwy 29)) some of the best mexican food in GT.

Mariachi DE Jalisco (Williams Drive & River Bend Dr.), my second favorite Mexican food in GT and easier to get/out than Dos Salsas. Where most of the local hispanics go.

Monument Cafe (north Austin Avenue) old school type dinner atmosphere, good breakfasts (great pancakes) and home-style lunch menu. has been featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on the Food Channel. They grow all their own veggies & spices on site and even have an organic market next door.

Bob's Catfish & More (Morrow Street next to San Gabriel Park), small town family owned been around 30+ years, mostly fried seafoods, known in the area for their catfish.

Catfish Parlour (out Williams drive), originated in Austin, now has 3 or 4 locations, one being in Georgetown. Great fried catfish, hush puppies to die for.

Wildfire (Austin Ave. between 8th & 9th), more upscale restaurant, wide variety menu, steaks, prime rib, rack of lamb, elk tenderloin ... a bit on the pricey side.

BB's home cooking (Williams drive), home style menu, CFS, meatloaf, fried catfish, crab cakes, lunch & dinner during the week, breakfast on the weekends.

El Charito (302 S. Austin Ave) while in town, be sure to try out the walk up window for breakfast tacos, some of the best Picadillo and Carne Guisada on the planet. They also have a small dining room for lunch and dinner. Great little hole in the wall.

Frankie's Pizza and Pasta 121 N. IH35 Frontage road (just north of Williams drive), great little Italian place, great calzone, baked ziti, chicken parmigiana, pizza ... in an old KFC building.

there's several more, but these are my favorites.

and of course there are all the chain restaurants ... Cotton Patch, Fish City Grill, Longhorn Steakhouse, Zio's, etc. etc.

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/19/15 03:21 AM

So which post was more helpful, mine or PMK? rolleyes I will definitely agree on Wildfire & Frankie's. The others I can't comment on because it's either been too long since I've eaten there or I haven't eaten there at all. Great post PMK up

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/19/15 05:18 PM

up I'm kind of a foodie ... Brother in-law, if there is some other type or kind of food I missed, let me know and I can offer recommendations.

Chinese, only recommendation is Shanghai Express (922 N. Austin Ave.) but we only go on Sunday's as they have a very nice 15-20 item buffet.

Greek, Plaka Greek Cafe (115 N. IH35, next to Frankie's Pizza), good variety of Greek options including Gyro Wraps.

something else???

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/19/15 11:56 PM

PMK have you been to that new place off 35 I think it's called George's on the Town?
Posted By: Brother in-law

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/20/15 02:43 AM

I think that gives me a pretty good spread. Im sure ill have to eat chain food for breakfast and lunch but will look forward a good meal in the noche. Hopefully im not to tired.

Any good watering holes?

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/20/15 11:07 AM

Hardtails is a very popular bar just north of town
Posted By: PMK

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/20/15 04:08 PM

_Lee, I have not tried George's on the Town yet. Have had a few friends try and said it was pretty good, upscale and a bit pricey.

Brother in-law, what type of school??? and what area of town??? Hit El Charito for breakfast, just a small building with a outside walk up window, orders to go (or they have a few picnic tables on the back porch). Best breakfast tacos in the county.
Posted By: PMK

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/20/15 04:16 PM

not my thing but yeah, Hardtails and they have live music out back some/most weekends. They used to have various different events/entertainment (jello wrestling, if that's your cup of tea) but not sure if they still do. http://www.hardtailsbarandgrill.com/index.htm

and there are a few closer to downtown on Main & Austin Ave ... The Uptown Social, CJ's sports bar/grill and of course most of the chain restaurants have bars, like Chili's, Longhorn Steakhouse, Fish City Grill.

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/20/15 10:17 PM

There's also a place called 600 degree pizza that's pretty good.

Another one of my favorite Mexican food places is La Margarita just east of Seward Junction ... 9 miles west of IH35 in Georgetown on the north side of highway 29 towards Liberty Hill/Bertram/Burnet.

a BBQ place I need to try is on West Morrow (behind Sonic on Austin Ave.) in the trailer/mobile food park. I have heard good things ... might give it a try for lunch.

I will tell her!

Great outreach! Name of church?

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/24/15 09:16 PM

Crestview Baptist on Williams Drive. We even have an adopt a Pirate program she can sign up for where a church member's family gives a much more personal touch and is there if she needs anything or even come over (or out) for occasional dinner if she desires. We leave that totally up to the student on how much contact they have with the adoptive family. Even if they need advise on local stuff (like car repairs, special places to go or see, etc.) ... Just someone more local that they can trust and seek out when needed or even come over to their house to have a quiet place to hangout or study. We adopted a male student that plays Lacrosse but we are in the heart of the season, so not much interaction with him lately. If your daughter is interested next fall, we (my wife and I) could adopt her as a friendly local family she could trust and ask stuff of, dinner, whatever she might need assistance with ... totally up to her. The church's approach is to not be pushy and let the student determine what and how much interaction they have or want.

Well thank you sir. That would be a great comfort to her Mom and me. Please PM me your info and I will give it to her. We are a Christian family and have of course encouraged her to seek out a good church home. Thanks again!

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/25/15 01:49 AM

Well breakfast is provided by the hotel so nothing to rate

My lunch this week is mostly planned out for us so here goes,

Monday lunch - Yaggis pizza, awesome two slice and drink lunch price and good pizza for $5 with drink

Monday dinner - Longhorn Steakhouse , this is a glorified Chilis. I had a filet. I put a1 sauce on it if that says anything. Potatoe was meh. I would rather go to chilis

Tuesday lunch- went back to Yaggis because the other choice was subway

Tuesday dinner - Catfish Parlor, had the fried fish and shrimp combo. Spicy catfish was pretty good. Regular catfish was worse than chicken express. Shrimp was alright , nothing special. Hush puppies were meh and has to be dipped in their tartar sauce. My favorite thing was the homemade ranch on the salad.
My coworker that was with me said he wouldn't go back and I agree. The atmosphere was nice, cs was good, and the music playing was good.

Tomorrow if I survive this class I will head towards the square. I have two more dinners while in town.
My findings to come

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/26/15 02:03 AM

Wednesday

Lunch - Mighty Fine burgers in Roundrock is a thumbs up on the burger and the fries. Onion rings are so so, stay fries

Dinner- Gumbos, blackened redfish with crab meat. Spot on and a hair pricey. I would go back

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/26/15 02:38 AM

Go on to Taylor, Vencils. Taylor Café right on the train tracks. Best bbq you will ever have. Worth the trip, promise!!!

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/26/15 03:16 AM

I forgot to mention Yaggis but it is my favorite pizza in town. I'm not surprised by your review of Catfish Parlor, never been a fan.PMK, I've eaten at that bbq place & thought it was pretty decent. I only had the bbq sandwich because I was on the go both times but no complaints

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/26/15 06:20 PM

Dang, a lot folks know Georgetown. That's where I live.

You guys got all of the good ones. Gumbo's and 600 degrees are my two top favorites. If you go to Catfish Parlor, the spicy fried oysters are the best thing they have. And their beer is cold.

600 degrees has great beer as well. Pizza is awesome.

Andice General Store is worth the drive for a burger and atmosphere. Mariachi's has some solid Mexican breakfast.

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/26/15 07:43 PM

Sierria Nevada, in my opinion, is the best breakfast in Georgetown

Dos Salsa's is a white mans mexican food
Posted By: Gumbeaux

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/26/15 08:04 PM

Is Sierra Nevada's the place right there at Williams & Austin Ave?

If so, yeah, that place is pretty good too.

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/26/15 08:23 PM

yes, the little house looking place right across from McDonalds
Posted By: PMK

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/26/15 08:42 PM

the little house to the south side of Fox Auto??? We have eaten lunch there (pretty good old style beef enchiladas) but never breakfast. We always hit El Charito when taking that path.

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/26/15 09:43 PM

I use to live out in weir, but moved to Leander a couple years ago...but I grew up in this area, so I'm pretty familiar with it all, I use to love going to L&M Cafe with my dad and the "old guys" when I was a kid roflmao
Posted By: PMK

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/26/15 10:14 PM

talk about an old style greasy spoon!!! I used to go there with my dad back in the mid '60s, then they moved to where Dos Salsas is now (that was originally a Dairy Queen). I don't know if Leander has the port butts on sale.
Posted By: tex70

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/26/15 11:06 PM

I'm located about 4-5 north-northeast of G'town, basically halfway between G'town & Walburg. Let us not forget the Chuckwagon & Dairy Hill when remembering greasy spoons of the past grin
Posted By: PMK

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/26/15 11:12 PM

I remember the chuckwagon, where was dairy hill? There was also a place called Archie's (might have been chuckwagon before) on the NW corner of Williams & IH35.

guess we are digressing from giving current places bang ... back on topic
Posted By: tex70

Re: Georgetown eats - 03/26/15 11:52 PM

Dairy Hill was where Papa Johns is now on Austin Ave(35-40 yrs ago). I vaguely remember Archie's & you might be right on it's location, kinda foggy for me. I too am sorry for drifting from current topic

Wildfire for dinner

Of the places I've been to , Wildfire has kicked the dog crap out of all the places I've been. I had an excellent steak but the menu could be tried every day. I would definetly go again.
