I did that every summer for years. It's straight Dog Chow now for me. Dogs don't get their energy from protein. They get it from glycogen.

Glycogen turns out to be a crucial piece of the metabolic switch. During the first few days of racing, sled dogs draw energy from glycogen stored inside muscle cells. But instead of depleting glycogen stores and tiring the muscles, the animals suddenly switch to a glycogen-sparing metabolism.

What breed of dogs do you hunt?

Funny thing. Dog chow has several colors of nuggets in there. Muffin picks out the light colors and puts them on the floor. She will eat all the dark colors.

Also, goodnight guys. Cougars and SMU are playing. I need to get acquainted for March madness.

When I had my lab that I hunted with I fed pro plan Joint diet in off season and their high performance during the fall and hunting season.

Full disclosure....I was in vet school and got it for free. bolt peep

Hunt hounds and feed Black Gold Performance Blend 26-18 year round. Dogs do great and don't overheat in the summer.
Adios,

Pro Plan all year. Smaller rations if we are not doing as much.

If you think your dog does just as good performance wise on Dog Chow as it does on Pro Plan so be it. But the ingredients in a $20 sack of feed and a $40 sack are quite different in several respects. The cheaper feeds might give energy equal to the better products but are usually loaded with sodium which will shorten your dog's life by harming organs. If you have a good dog that you want to keep healthy for the maximum possible time, please read the ingredients in the feed and ask your Vet about feeding salty dog food and see what they tell you. Other things being equal, a dog fed quality food will outlive one fed the cheap stuff.
