Gundog competition ...Any interest?

Gundog competition ...Any interest? - 09/19/16 05:17 PM

I tried to put a competition on last year and just didn't get enough interested people. Just wondering what it would take to get you guys out and compete with your dogs?
Paybacks for.placements? New shotgun ?
What I find interesting is that the area surrounding DFW has literally thousands of guys with good dogs. Yet they are not interested or I'm not reaching them?
There is a little town in Kansas that puts on 2 events a year and they get 60+ entries every time.
What would it take? Help me out....

Basic rules are pretty easy. You and your dog get 15 minutes to find and bag 3 birds. Fastest time / most points wins. Field is aprox 12 ac sq.

Pointing and flushing does not go together. They already have NSTRA up there.

This would not be affiliated with any group in particular except maybe for Upland Classic.

Bodies Dad tried to get up something like ths a couple of years ago. Never heard from him after it was over. NSTRA has all you need for pointing dogs. I no longer go because we have no trials in my area, plus I like hunting more.

Are you thinking of the National Bird Dog Circuit?

Blanco I'm in. Flushing and pointing. Can't beat an event that is less than 45 mintutes away from the house!

The game is the same as what is played by Bird Dog Circuit and a group called Upland Classic.
To start out it will probably be the outlaw Redneck version. If we could get enough guys interested maybe later it could become something bigger and better.
The key to making it work is getting enough people involved.
Its a great way to keep the dog tuned up and in shape not to mention the owner, and its good for some friendly competition. Its usually close to home and relatively affordable.

I'm in for flushing!

Re: Gundog competition ...Any interest? - 09/20/16 12:06 PM

I am going to put on a practice day in the near future (when it cools off a bit more)
You can come out and try the game and have a bit of fun. Probably grasslands in Decatur?
Unless someone has access to a large piece of property?
Those that are interested PM me your name and phone number/ e-mail and we will get something rolling

Just my thinking out loud...
There are guys that will be detractors of this type of game ,for what ever reason.
My take is that the skills used in this game are identical to those used for hunting. It promotes teamwork between hunter and dog and compliments the bond you must have to be successful.

Your idea is a good one but being near a metropolitan area know your up against NAVHDA events, HRC Upland, AKC Tests and Trials, NSTRA, other club events, and real hunting during season. Also if your training day is at LBJ, take into acount there is probably an event of some kind scheduled almost every weekend this time of year. Sometimes more than one club will have things scheduled the same day and be running dogs on different areas of LBJ. http://vvfta.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_10.html Good luck on your endeavor.

I have been involved in AKC and HRC events and although I like them it is a bit different game. No ribbons here. Winners get money or prizes. Grasslands are very large. Not a problem

So I guess it's the same format as "bird dog wars" that's showing on pursuit channel tonight?

Re: Gundog competition ...Any interest? - 09/21/16 12:54 AM

I'd enter if it were near me and I had no hunting plans. If it was side by side to a NSTRA trial I'd choose NSTRA.

Yes the same game

Re: Gundog competition ...Any interest? - 09/21/16 03:47 AM

Just for reference
http://nbdca.com/
http://www.uplandclassic.com/

They are very close in rules and there are plenty of videos on youtube. I think on Tuesday evenings BDC is playing a series of their latest seasons competition on Pursuit channel.
Honestly if you have a dog this is a fun AND addictive game.

Re: Gundog competition ...Any interest? - 09/22/16 05:19 PM

If any of you are interested in this or possibly even just curious, give me your info thru a PM
At this point just getting enough people together is important.
For those that have dogs you want to train this can be a big help.

I hope the weather stays cool more days to play.
If you know someone that has dogs (pointers & flushers) let them know.
