Tracking Dog Tips

Tracking Dog Tips - 05/06/16 04:56 PM

We recently got 2 7 week old Catahoula/Blue Lacy pups. We also have a 1 yr old Catahoula/Pit cross. We would like to train these guys to track wounded deer.

Any tips on starting the pups out and when?

Have had the 1yr old track a few freshly wounded and he does great. Any tips to make him a stronger tracker on colder trails. Also, best way to teach them to stay on one scent. Sometimes not sure if he has jumped tracks. He loves to fetch, play tug, track, etc.

Thanks!

They know what to do. Based on your sig, I assume you have a hunting ranch? If that is the case here are a couple suggestions to consider. Just use one dog at a time. Every time a deer is down get one of the dogs and let it track it. If time allows drag the deer away from its spot and let the dog track the trail. It won't take long and you will have a top shel tracking hound.

That is good advice. Thanks.

The pups seem pretty smart and already track stuff around the yard. Should be a fun season!
