Cowtown HRC Hunt Test

Cowtown HRC Hunt Test - 03/02/16 02:42 PM

Any members running their dogs at this test? I figured I would give it a shot but haven't been training any since the end of the season. It looks like the started level is pretty straight forward.

HRC started is fun. If your dog is not gun shy, will mark and retrieve a duck on land and water, your good to go. Read the rules and watch the other handlers and dogs run before yours and y'all will do fine. I also got a tremendous amount of well meant help and advice from other handlers at those HRC tests. At the very least you will see what you need to work on for the Lone Star hunt test on the weekend after, the 19th and 20th.

Cowtown is the club I belong to. Me and my boy will be hacking away at Seasoned even though we've regressed a bit through hunting season. Got some bad habits to tighten up before the 12th!
Look for the old guy w/the wild red dog and come introduce yourself. You will have fun and I'll give you any help I can.
Plan on staying for the auction and tailgate party sat. night, it's always a good time.

HaHa, glad I'm not the only one Ol Yeller.

Matty, Both cowtown and lone star tests conflict with work some. My Dog has his SHR and I have not done any recent formal training with Dash for Seasoned either, but I may try to work out a single day to enter one of them in Seasoned just to support the clubs and for entertainment. I have a different kind of dog you don't see at these things much. The thing about HRC is even if your dog fails a task, you get to keep running your dog. With AKC once your scratched, your done. Mostly I need to finish Dash's AKC Junior Retriever. I can't be too far from home right now for personal reasons, but I think there is one or two AKC hunt tests near the DFW next month I may try to make. If I do and you want to do the AKC side too, I will be happy to help in any way I can. Oh and when you are going to do your title run with the pup on the HRC side, let Ol_Yeller and I know. We will be more than happy to show up just to dump water on your head. grin

So so by all day does that mean till sun down? Is there usually BBQ/similar for sale at these events? Any problems with drinking cold beverages throughout the day?

No alcohol until after the last dog runs. Usually $5.00 sack lunch and bbq or fajitas for the evening festivities.
And like John said, shout at us when you go for the title, we'll be happy to help w/the water torture...

I'll be running three at finished. I feel good about how they have been looking in training but at the end of the day they're dogs so we'll see. Good luck, breathe and have fun.

I'll be at Palo Duro Canyon camping with my scout troop. Guess she'll have to wait.

My dog just got her started title!

Was fun running the started tests! Very low pressure, everyone very helpful and friendly. Had a great time and am looking forward to training some more and trying some seasoned tests next season!

Hook is fully set!

Pic from last weekend after her started title. I ran her at the Colorado River Retriever Club event and my buddy ran her last weekend as I couldn't attend.

Already got the ribbons hanging on the wall over my reloading bench! I know started isn't the worlds most challenging title but I had a blast learning and training her. Looking forward to seasoned!

What is the condition of the ducks that will be used in the HRC hunt test? I did some training this past weekend with a few frozen ducks but with poor results. She didn't handle the frozen ducks like she does fresh. Once they thawed a little she was better.

Freshly dispatched the morning of the test. They do get skanky after several retrieves, but not frozen.

Re: Cowtown HRC Hunt Test - 03/14/16 07:00 PM

Cowtown put on a very nice test... what awesome training grounds as well. Unfortunately Ruby did better than I did. We finished our land series at 9am. I then realized that they weren't going to begin the water till after lunch. I got bored with it and decided to leave. It was a good time but unless I have several dogs to take I don't see myself going back... too much down time for this ADHD dog owner.
