gun training a puppy, would 410 work starting out? - 03/26/15 02:57 AM
I'm going to be starting to gun train a 6 M old Brittany, and wondering if a 410 would work to start him out on shooting far away and then gradually working closer? I ask this, since my son is turning 9 and i was thinking of buying a 410 youth shotfun for him to go out and hunt some small game with me, and was thinking that it may be a good gun for training slowly my puppy to get used to gun sound....I don't own a 22, and don't really want to buy one just for that purpose, if i don't have to.

I would advise against it. I use a blank gun with 209 primers and start quite a ways away.

I start off with a kids cap gun and work up to a 209 primer

I'd find out his background with gunfire before I decided. My little yorkie never paid any attention to a 20 the first time she heard it. Any gun at a distance should give you a clue.

I would get some distance and play fetch also . If there a gun club close by that would be a great place but keep some distance and the next time take him a little closer

First time I took mine out to hunt he was 7 mos old and I carried a 12ga. Didn't bother him a bit.

You got lucky. I would advise the OP against doing that and would recommend he introduce it slow and from long distances moving closer over several days keeping it all up beat and happy.
