Dog peeing in sleep

Dog peeing in sleep - 03/19/15 12:29 PM

My 8 year old DD Izzy has had a couple of accidents in the past 6 weeks or so. It has happened three time so far. I guess it could have happened when she was laying around in the yard too, I don't know. She will be sleeping and when she stands up, there is a puddle under her butt. It isn't a lot, maybe a 6" diameter. Her hip that is down is also wet. Luckily it is on hard floors. I soaked it up each time with a white paper towel and it is just slightly yellow almost clear and there really isn't any odor to it. I am 99.9% sure it is pee though.

What could cause this? She is on ProPlan dog food. She has been on ProPlan for over a year, but the current flavor for only about 4-5 months. She gets plenty of water, actually she seems thirsty a lot and drinks a ton. She gets plenty of exercise. Fixed female, never bred.

I haven't noticed it after any type of activity. The first two times were both the same day. The third time was this morning.

What are your thoughts? Is she just getting old? Should I see a vet?

Two other dogs on the same food with no issues.

See the vet. It can be medicated.

My Beagle did this back in November. Pretty sure she got into some ashes and charcoal from the BBQ grill and was throwing up ALOT!! She also peed in her sleep during that time period. She never did it before and hasn't done it since.

Interesting. My charcoal grill overflowed several times in the last couple of months due to the rain. She has free access to charcoal ashes.

Has the dog been fixed. Common problem They have medication to take care of that. My lab takes one pill everyday and another once a week.

I would get her checked by the vet.
You got to rule out a few things, before thinking its just her getting up in years.

Vet will first address it as an bladder infection...being spayed can cause this and the solution for our cocker was Proin. I don't know who it was here that suggested it but it works. She is 25lbs and on a pill 2x a day...bottle lasts about 30 days and is $20. She never leaks anymore.

Good luck Stink!

The dog needs a visit to the vet. Could be anything from a bladder infection to kidney failure.

My parents 90# ridgeback does this. Supposedly my dad was told it is nothing to worry about. Something that happens to some dogs when they get fixed.

does this occur as they get older?

This was happening to my dog a while back. Here is a link to the thread. I eventually weened her off of the proin. She hasnt had an accident since. Just make sure it isnt an infection or kidney issue.

I don't believe so. The ridgeback started having this happen when she was only about a year old.

This was my fist thought. My lab does it every now and then. Maybe 2-3 times a year, max. I've seen her do it while sleeping right next to me. It woke her up and she went running thinking she'd get punished. Can't really get mad at her for it.

Plus, I'm partially to blame. It's an easily medicated issue, as everyone has been saying, but I'm not the biggest fan of medicating for a non-serious/constant issue. That's just me, though, and can perfectly understand others that do.

I thought I updated this thread. I guess not.

I took Izzy to the vet and the vet put her on Proin. I had her on it for two months and she stopped leaking. She really didn't like taking the pill no mater what I did. So after two months I stopped giving it to her because she wasn't eating while on the Proin.

Fast forward...

Izzy started to leak just a little last week. She did it three times during the night. It was only about a couple of tablespoons or so. I refilled her prescription of Proin.

Now I have one weird thought that may or may not be related. I have always had Izzy on Frontline. I haven't seen any flees on her ever. I stopped using it over the summer because I am lazy. I saw one fee on her in October, so I started Frontline again. Three days after I gave her her second dose she started to leak. Is that just a coincidence?

I guess its possible.
You could take her off of it, and see if she improves. Try it again a few months later, and see if it returns.

I have one dog that can't take trifexis. It makes him moody, and he wants to growl at just about everyone. Pulling him off of it, and then retrying it later is how I narrowed down the cause.

I have a 5 year old bitch and she has been on proin for 4 years. If she missed it for a few days she'll leak.

Our lab was as good as it gets, then one day he let loose, had a tumor.... A big tumor. About 8, I hate doomsdayers but I'd get her checked asap.

Our cocker has been on Proin for over a year and it's been awesome...no side effects to this point.

Re: Dog peeing in sleep - 12/14/15 12:45 PM

I started her back on Proin as soon as it started again and she stopped leaking. She doesn't like it. She won't just eat it. If I shove it down her throat, she thinks I am beating her. If I wrap it in something she just picks it out. I have been crushing it over her food, but she doesn't like that. She eats around it and sometimes doesn't eat.

My beagle has a healing broken leg and is the same way with her meds. If I have my lab sitting right there she wolves it down wrapped in cheese or a training treat because she thinks the lab will steal it.
