Crate Training Question

Well we are on night 2 of new puppy, Amos. He is a 7 week old GSP. We are going through the normal balling and squalling phase at night, probably got a good 3 hours of sleep last night. It doesn't really upset me, I know what I signed up for with a pup and will gladly do whatever I need too. My question is simple, is it best for him to sleep in his crate in a separate room from me, or should he be in the bedroom that I am sleeping in? I've heard conflicting reports and wanted to see what you wise gentlemen thought. WE are taking the necessary bathroom breaks during the night.

Some do better if they can see you, but I always crate train mine in a different room.
One pup that I had could howl like no other, when I covered the crate he settled easier.
The best thing for getting a little rest while crate training is ear plugs.

Put a clock next to the crate and keep the crate in your room

Yep, I put mine as far from the bedroom as possible and have been known to throw a couple quilts over the crate to help cut the noise a little. My dogs in crate training could have a blanket, a toy, and water, that's all. And no attention whatsoever unless still and quiet for a reasonable amount of time.

We always crate train puppies in our bedroom next to the bed. That way I know when they need to go out. The pups like to be near you. If they should fuss I just dangle my fingers in their crate and they usually simmer down. Every now and then we get one that won't relax. Those I will put in bed with me for a few nights until they know the routine.

Dogs have separation anxiety. They are pack animals, you are their alpha dog. They howl and cry because they are alone and afraid. If they are suffering separation anxiety you are a bad doggy daddy.

Whew I don't envy you at this stage. My vizsla took almost two weeks to crate train. He bawled do much we had to sleep with hard range muffs on our heads.

I don't know why but my lab we got a few months ago never whined or cried one time in the crate. I got lucky.

No longer on the internet, but these had been printed out and sent to me by Blaze's breeder 10 years ago. Still in my files, but no longer on the internet. Fortunately I was able to find them through the wayback machine. Pretty much how I went about it with my last two dogs with great success.

I didn't want the crate in my bedroom at the time because I was living in a small place and I didn't have the space. What I did was, I put whatever T-shirt I wore all day in the crate with him at night when I went to sleep. It had my scent all over it and seemed to help calm him down in the real early stages. Yes, he peed on most of them for the first few weeks, but it wasn't the end of the world.

I've got another question for y'all, and this is probably going to be a theme for the next few weeks. Crate training at night has gone great, he no longer whines when in it and just goes to sleep, and for the most part we are sleeping all the way through the night. But during the day is a different story. Whenever he is alone, at all he is whining and balling. He obviously naps in his crate, but if I have to run to the store for just an hour he balls his brains out in the crate. Do I just let him wail and then turn him out when he quiets down?
