Need a little advice

Need a little advice - 11/20/14 03:35 AM

I've got a 4 month old lab. He has been an inside dog since I got him at 8 weeks. He goes everywhere with me if I'm not working, then he is with my wife. I'm getting ready to crate train. Never did it because he's always with one or the both of us.

Is this a bad thing? I've talked to some other guys that say it is. They have trained their own duck dogs and said to leave him outside in a kennel. Do not mess with him unless you are training him. I bought him as a family dog and to duck hunt with. He loves to retrieve. I will take him out at least once a day and throw a bumper for him 4-5 times and he still wants to keep going but I stop because I don't want to push him to much. I'm gonna be sending him off in the next 2 month for professional training and wondering should I build a kennel for him to stay in before I send him to the trainer since he has always been inside?

Whoever told you that is not giving you very sound advice. You are doing just what you need to be doing with your pup, a lot of love and socialization.

It doesn't matter at all.

Thanks y'all. Was just curious how he would adapt to being in a new place and never staying outside full time while he was with the trainers. Just want to make sure I'm doing everything right.

I agree and wouldn't build a kennel, unless you want one.
I don't consider crate training, the same as having a dog in a outside kennel.
All of my dogs are crate trained (inside dog crates). Just makes it easier when you have a house full of guests, or your traveling.

One of mine sleeps under the covers, but don't have enough room in the bed for all 3 of them.

Agree with everyone else. My girl was a spoiled brat as a baby. Slept in the bed all the time. She went off to training for 5 or so months and was fine. Now she is back and in the house all the time unless we are training.

I agree, the more time they are with you the better. on a side note, before you send her to a trainer,a good book to read is Dick Walters water dog.it is a lot of fun training your own dog. 15 minutes a day. a hell of alot cheaper than a pro trainer. Forrest

Agree that your dog can be a family pet and a great gun dog. Just explain to all family members that they are to be pals and not trainer with the dog. You must be the Alpha creature in the dogs world. Get An E collar and use it ALWAYS when training, it helps the dogs hearing. Let me know if I can help.

Nope, no way a bird dog should be kept in the house

Ours live outside. We have almost two acres on a major creek. I run the dogs five days a week for at least an hour. Both are finished bird dogs and we hunt constantly from the beginning of dove season until the end of quail- all over Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. We work them on pen raised birds as well. Lots of time together in the yard and in the field, that's the key to communication and great memories.

Best of luck to you and the new pup.

Some of my best hunting dogs have lived inside. Crate training a dog is a good thing. It gives them a place that's all their own were they wont be bothered. On trips they get better rest for those long days in the field. At the hotel it gives them security when left in the room or truck. It keeps them in check so to speak.
